Propaganda film:  Towards the end of the First World War, Oberleutnant Klaus Olden and Air Force Lieutenant Jochen Wendler get to know each other.  Side by side, they hold onto their hopeless positions on the front until the inevitable defeat.  Together with Nurse Barbara, a childhood friend of Jochen, they drive off to East Prussia.  They wish to visit Jochen's relatives on an East Prussian estate.  But the relatives' estate has been destroyed.  Klaus and Jochen are forced to take any work they can find.  But one day, the eternal soldier in Jochen comes to the fore in a depot, where German cannon barrels are to be melted down.  He is unable to do the work.  He leaves his friend, who is less scrupulous.  Half-jokingly, they tell each other, they'll meet again in five years.  Five years later:  Jochen has been fighting relentlessly for the "German Cause".  When he sees Klaus again, he realizes how different the two of them are from each other.  He also meets Barbara again and falls in love with her.  This leads to jealousy between the two old friends until they finally realize that the fight to "awaken" the German people must take precedence over getting laid.

Propagandafilm.

Too much history, not enough movie, 4/21/2021 5:05 AM
From: Wolfie
They really bit off WAY more than they could chew with this one.
Following the life paths of 2 men who became close friends in the trenches of WWI, the film attempts to cover 20+ very turbulent years, including a love story with a woman who isn't quite well - which could have been a movie in itself.
A series of movies, perhaps using Otto Paust's 'Deutschland' books as a model - would have been better.
