The young Kamma von Ruessing has left her boarding room. She's an orphan and hopes to experience the joy of life in the home of her prestigious and wealthy uncle. Unfortunately, she soon discovers that her uncle is impoverished and can't support her. The only refuge is a noble establishment, which her mother had bought years ago. In this establishment live old ladies, who stand at the threshold of old age and are done with life. They live a meaningless existence; they interest themselves in trivialities and quirky passions. They are governed by an abbess, who knows nothing but the rules of the foundation and tolerates no contradiction of her interpretation of those rules. Thus, it is no wonder that Kamma feels miserable here from the very first day of moving in. She can't bear the thought that her life will finish here. The only "understanding" person in the house is Miss von Benzon.

Die junge Kamma von Rüssing hat ihre Pension verlassen. Sie ist Waise und hofft, im Hause des als wohlhabend angesehenen Onkels die Freuden des Lebens vor sich zu haben. Aber sie muss erfahren, dass ihr Onkel verarmt ist und sie nicht zu sich nehmen kann. Als einzige Zuflucht bleibt ihr ein adliges Stift, in das sie ihre Mutter vor Jahren eingekauft hat. In diesem Stift wohnen Damen, die an der Schwelle des Greisenalters stehen und mit dem Leben abgeschlossen haben. Sie führen ein inhaltloses Dasein, ihr Interesse konzentriert sich auf Nichtigkeiten und schrullige Passionen. Sie werden beherrscht von einer Äbtissin, die nichts kennt als die Statuten des Stiftes und bei ihrer Auslegung keinen Widerspruch duldet. Es ist kein Wunder, dass sich Kamma in diesem Hause vom ersten Tage an todunglücklich fühlt. Sie kann sich nicht mit dem Gedanken abfinden, schon mit dem Leben abgeschlossen zu haben. Die einzige »verstehende Seele im Stift ist Fräulein von Benzon.
