A Delightful Film!, 4/15/2021 9:36 AM
From: brian_abroad@yahoo.com
It's interesting to contrast the two German "Trapp Familie" films with "The Sound of Music" stage musicals and film and see how Baroness von Trapp's memoirs flavored each differently. It's easy to see why these German films were so popular in post-war Germany. The first one kind of glosses over the Anschluss of Austria, which leads to the family's rapid exodus from their homeland. While the film version of "The Sound of Music" makes it clear the Nazi takeover and demands on the family are the reason they left, it does take some liberties with geography. (You can't escape Nazis by "climbing ev'ry mountain" behind Salzburg because you land in Berchtesgaden!) Both of the German films do a wonderful job of highlighting the von Trapps' stalwart faith, love of homeland, and most of all, love of family. I highly commend both to your living room! Then read Maria von Trapp's "Story of the Trapp Family Singers" to get her poignant, witty and heartfelt side of the story.
