THE VILLAGE TEACHER  (1947)  * with switchable English subtitles *

As the film opens, we are placed at an elegant ball in imperial St. Petersburg where Vera, an exuberant youth excitedly tells her dance partner, a dashing young cadet named Sergei, that she will soon fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher. Her life’s goal will not be carried out in the comfort of the city; she will be traveling many miles away to a remote Siberian village. We soon learn there is more to Sergei than meets the eye when the Tsar’s police suspect him of revolutionary activity and arrest him that very evening. Vera’s teaching career gets off to an inauspicious beginning as the locals mock her city naïveté, demonstrated by her failure to bring along a proper pair of felt boots to guard against the notoriously harsh winters. These attitudes towards the newcomer change however when they witness her courageously interrupting an episode of domestic violence involving a village bully of whom even the rough and tumble male residents are afraid. Gradually the locals see the value of the teacher’s contributions to their children who in turn begin instructing their younger chums on their own, even fashioning a globe out of twigs and holding impromptu lessons in the fields.

THE DOOR WITH SEVEN LOCKS  (1962)  * with switchable English subtitles *

Scotland Yard boss Sir John is at a loss. Within a short period of time, two people who are not related at first glance are murdered. Inspector Dick Martin and his assistant Holmes begin the investigation and only get further when the crook Pheeny shows up at Martin's and tells him a strange story about a door with seven locks that he should have broken open for an unknown client. When Pheeny is killed shortly thereafter, Martin remains only the drawing of a family coat of arms that Pheeny left him. A letter is found in the guise of a priest who was killed in Victoria Station and asked to be present with the lawyer Haveloc. Haveloc is the executor of the late Lord Selford, who later turns out to have sent a key to seven of his acquaintances shortly before his death, which they used to open a door with seven locks in the Selford family crypt on the day of his son's majority behind which the legacy of young Lord Selford is said to be. With the help of librarian Sybil Lansdown, Inspector Martin finds out that Pheeny's drawing shows the Selford family crest. With his assistant Holmes, Martin visits Selford Castle and meets the police-known former gangster Tom Cawler at the door and the alleged doctor Dr. Staletti, who strikes him as a little strange.

2 DVD SET:  IVAN THE TERRIBLE  (1944/58)  * with switchable & hard-encoded English subtitles *

In 1547, Ivan IV, the archduke of Moscow, crowns himself Tsar of Russia and immediately looks to reclaim territory, which was taken from Russia by foreign powers. His coronation is met with grumbling from the boyars, whose powers Ivan threatens. The Tsar's marriage ceremony is interrupted by the news that several boyar palaces have been burned to the ground, while a mob of commoners complains to Ivan that he's being led astray by his new wife's family (the Romanovs). Ivan calms the crowd, but it is then that envoys from Kazan arrive with a ceremonial knife and suggest he do himself a favor by using it to commit suicide. Ivan at once proclaims war on Kazan. The film then moves to the 1552 siege of Kazan. Shortly thereafter, Ivan falls deathly ill on his way back to Moscow and is closely watched by his internal enemies and supposed friends, who excitedly wait his death to restore the power of the boyars, who will make peace with Russia's enemies and surrender Ivan's conquests to guarantee the boyars' hold over Muscovy. But when Ivan does not die, the result will be a near-hysterical paranoia in the Tsar, which will lead to the formation of the Oprichniki, the medieval equivalent of later, dreaded institutions (Chekists; OGPU; GPU; NKVD; KGB). The crushing of the state's traitors and the seemingly endless tragedies in Ivan's life, lead him to wonder whether he is being punished by God for his rule over Muscovy. He abdicates and leaves Moscow, waiting till the common people beg him to return, thus justifying his future absolute rule by "the will of the people".

The second part of the film opens in the court of King Sigismund of Poland, to whom Ivan's deadly rival, Kurbsky, has fled and sworn allegiance. The Poles promise to make Kurbsky ruler of the Tsar's empire, when Kurbsky launches his campaign against Russia with Polish material support. However, the battle was to commence while Ivan was away from Moscow after abdicating. Now that he's returned, the plot is foiled. In the meantime, Basmanov, head of the Oprichniki, discovers that Ivan's wife was killed by a boyar supporter. The boyars, for their part, plead with Ivan's enemies to overthrow the Tsar. A plot is hatched to assassinate Ivan at a banquet (and from this point on, the film is shown in color). At the banquet, Ivan gets drunk while his secret policemen dance around him. It is revealed shortly thereafter what the boyars plan to do to Ivan, but the surprise they will experience thereafter will secure Ivan's place in history.

A STORMY NIGHT  (O noapte furtunoasa)  (1943)  * with switchable English subtitles *

Bucharest, 1876: Don Dumitrache gives orders to his reliable assistant, Chiriac, to keep an eye on his young wife, Veta. Dumitrache is positive she's having an affair, but doesn't know who it is. Little does he suspect that his trusted man ain't so trusty after all!

Preparation and filming for this classic comedy took place in 1941 - 42, with actual filming begun on 12 January 1942. At the time, Romania was entering its seventh month in the war against the Soviet Union. Bucharest was under a state of constant alert against air raids, so filming outdoors at night was impossible. All the film's exteriors were constructed in a very small studio, originally intended for music recordings only. For panoramic shots, two or three sets were combined into one shot during editing. The film finally premiered on 22 March 1943, long after Romania's fortunes in the East had turned against them and a good comedy was probably more than welcome on the home front. When the Communists took over after the War, the "offensive" parts of the film were edited and lost to history forever.

4 DVD SET:  HITLER – EIN FILM AUS DEUTSCHLAND  (1977)  * with German & English audio *

Hitler: A Film from Germany has no clear plot or chronology. Instead, each part explores one particular topic.

Part 1: Der Gral - Von der Weltesche bis zur Goethe-Eiche von Buchenwald (The Grail - From the Cosmic Ash-Tree to the Goethe Oak of Buchenwald) deals with Hitler's cult of personality in Nazi propaganda.

Part 2: Ein deutscher Traum ... bis ans Ende der Welt (A German Dream ... Until the End of the World) focuses on the pre-Nazi German cultural, spiritual, and national heritage that Nazi propaganda related to.

Part 3: Das Ende eines Wintermärchens und der Endsieg des Fortschritts (The End of a Winter's Tale and the Final Victory of Progress) tells about the Holocaust and the ideology behind it, particularly from Himmler's point of view.

Part 4: Wir Kinder der Hölle erinnern uns an das Zeitalter des Grals (We Children of Hell Recall the Age of the Grail) consists mostly of André Heller reading out scenes from the script that were not shot, climaxing in Heller talking to a Hitler puppet on how he completely destroyed Germany spiritually, combined with a satire on former Nazis who after the war made profits from the Nazi era by running a Nazi tourism and entertainment industry for foreigners.

This inventive, exhaustive seven-hour film looks at the rise, reign and demise of Adolf Hitler. German director Hans Jürgen Syberberg, who was a child during World War II, doesn't try to recreate history to the letter. Instead, he places his actors -- many of whom play several roles -- on a stage and has them reenact events based on and inspired by Hitler's life. The action combines traditional narration and historical characters, but also idiosyncratic tweaks, like the use of puppets.

THE INDIAN SCARF  (Das indische Tuch)  (1963)  * with switchable English subtitles *

One evening, old Lord Lebanon is murdered in his castle during a telephone conversation with an Indian scarf. His heirs, which later appear in the dead man's castle to hear the reading of the will, are shocked to discover there's a "pre-will". The heirs are to spend the next six days and six nights together in the building and only after doing so, will discover what they've inherited. Whoever leaves the castle (alive or dead), forfeits his share to the benefit of the remaining relatives. Fortunately, a horrible storm will isolate the castle by washing out the roads and preventing anyone from leaving anyway.

The "Zaubergeige", a Stradivari, has come into the hands of the count from Hessia, who sought it out for his Homburg Music Museum.  With pride, the music director Decker shows the violin to the famous violinist Georg Helmesberger.  He has arrived in town to play as a soloist in a concert.  Late in the evening, he insists on seeing the violin again.  But when they leave the museum, they don't notice that they've locked someone inside, whom they did not see before.  The man is Andreas Halm, a young and gifted violinist.  He is poor and hungry for fame, but for now he has only one burning wish:  to see Helmesberger play on this violin.  He then does the unthinkable:  he swipes the violin from the museum.

Cassim -- a rich, oriental lord -- sends his cheeky servant Ali Baba to buy a voluptuous female slave.  Instead, he brings back the dancer Morgiane, whom he has the hots for.  While traveling in a caravan robbed by Abdel's forty thieves, Ali hides among the camels and learns the secret of the Sesame Cave.  Using the stolen loot, he buys Morgiane for himself, as well as a house for him and his beggar friends.  Cassim, however, gets him drunk and finds out where he got all his gold from.  Then he plans to rob him at the wedding for him and Morgiane.  Abdel, however, observes them both ... and he plans to invite his forty robbers to the wedding, too.

BORIS GODUNOV  (1954)   * with hard-encoded English subtitles *

Lavish, 1954 Soviet film based on Mussorgsky's opera of the same name and which was referred to as a "national musical drama".  The basis of the opera's plot was Pushkin's dramatic poem about Russia at the end of the 16th Century, when various candidates and adventurers fought for the tsarist throne.  One of these is Boris Godunov, a man persecuted by the voice of his conscience for having once committed murder.  Then there's the dramatic history of the young monk Grisky Otrepeva, who dreams of world glory.  There's also the figure of Dimitry, the impostor, who, with the help of foreigners and the treacherous Russian nobility, attempts to pass himself off as the rightful Tsar.  But of note is that the hero of the drama is not one from the common folk.  The common people in this opera are oppressed and raped of their dignity.  They realize that whoever is Tsar, he will be on the side of the rich and powerful.

Financial broker Burnes contacts the chief of the criminal police regarding a theft.  A valuable ring belonging to his wife has been stolen.  While the police suspect it was simply a "normal" break-in, in the course of the investigation, Mr. Burnes' seedy past life comes out.  Years before, he was involved in a case of embezzlement, but was acquitted.  Another person received a long prison sentence in his place.  Apparently, the break-in is somehow connected to this past affair.  Then Burnes' marriage to a much younger woman, Florence, is cast in a dubious light.  A murder under mysterious circumstances is compromising a whole bunch of people.

BAB EL HADID  (Cairo Station)  (1958)   * with hard-encoded English subtitles *

A newsstand owner takes pity on Qinawi, a lame young man, and gives him a job selling newspapers in the Cairo train station. The women there all shun him because of his mild handicap, though he has little trouble walking. Qinawi becomes obsessed with Hannuma, a beautiful cold drink vendor. But she is engaged to Abu Siri, a husky luggage porter who is trying to organize his co-workers into a union to better their lot. Nonetheless, Qinawi proposes to her. When she rejects his fantasy of a home and children in his village, Qinawi's obsession turns to madness. Inspired by an unsolved murder in the news, he buys a knife and plots to kill Hannuma. When the local policemen try to catch Hannuma and the other women illegally selling drinks, she asks Qinawi to take her incriminating drink bucket and hide it. He seeks to lure her to a warehouse to pick it up, but she asks a friend to get it instead.  In the darkness, Qinawi does not notice the substitution; he stabs the other woman repeatedly, then hides the body in a wooden crate supposedly holding Hannuma's trousseau. Then he gets Abu Siri to put it aboard a train for Hannuma's impending wedding. The woman is not dead, however. She is found, and the station is alerted. The men who stand to lose by Abu Siri's unionization at first try to pin the attempted murder on him, but the would-be victim identifies her real assailant. Meanwhile, unaware of her near escape from death, Hannuma goes to get her bucket. Qinawi chases her through the rail yard and catches her, holding a knife to her head to keep the crowd at bay. The newsstand owner tells Qinawi that he will be allowed to marry Hannuma and coaxes him into putting on his wedding garment. Qinawi complies, then realizes he has donned a straitjacket. He struggles, but is taken away.

ARZT OHNE GEWISSEN  (1959)

Professor Lund is an ambitious and renowned heart specialist, who is secretly carrying out heart transplant experiments deep in the cellar of his remote castle.  To carry out these experiments, he needs young, healthy hearts, which he steals from innocent guinea pigs fresh off the street, whom he sacrifices to help those, he considers more worthy.  He is assisted in his work by a former concentration camp doctor, who years before was sentenced to death and who has absolutely no scruples.  But the colleague Lund has recruited to help him in his work has scruples and he's not at all prepared to kill the young woman on the table before him to transplant her heart into the body of the famous singer laying nearby.  Classified as a horror film, it speaks volumes about current-day society, that this film sounds actually more credible as a "drama" than some horror based on a fantasy.

THE KING OF SUMAVA  (Kral Sumavy) (1959)  * with switchable English subtitles *

The film takes place in 1948.  The principal protagonists are Sergeant Karel Zeman and Master Sergeant Vaclav Kot.  The film has been described as being about border guards; this is incorrect.  Border patrols were not activated in Czechoslovakia until 1951.  Rather, Kot heads a department of border police, which has the task of combating smugglers, who are crossing from Bavaria into Czechoslovakia (and for ideological reasons, are called "agents" in the film) to bring in contraband.  Early on, it's obvious that the smugglers are being led into the Sumava region by a local, who knows the terrain very well.  Otherwise, it would be impossible for the intruders to navigate out of the swamps  (historically speaking, these smugglers from both the Bavarian and Czech sides of the border were frequently expelled Sudeten Germans, who had lived in the region prior to the end of the Second World War).  For this reason, the mysterious local leading the smugglers is referred to as "the King of Sumava".  Sergeant Zeman falls in love with Marie, a shopkeeper, whose husband fled to Bavaria years before after hitting a local boy with his car and killing him.  In Bavaria, he joins a band of smugglers and is involved in a shootout on the border, killing one of the policemen.   (Also known as Smugglers of Death).

DAVON TRAUMEN ALLE MADCHEN  (1961)

Even after the holidays have ended, the pupils of an all-girls' boarding school aren't thinking about their studies, but only dancing and kissing.  So it suits them just fine, that a small band with hot boys moves into the old mill next to the school.  Add to that some slapstick confusion, when word gets out, that the school board's coming on an inspection tour.  The inspection team, however, wishes to show up incognito and ends up at the boy band's mill, while at the boarding school itself, the band's leader is mistakenly thought to be the school inspector.  In the end, the five hot boys will find five, suitably hot girls.

PLANETA BUR  (Planet of Storms)  (1962)  * with German audio and switchable English subtitles *

A joint Soviet-American expedition is sent to Venus in three spacecraft.  One of the ships, "Chapel" is destroyed in a collision with a meteortie.  The remaining two ships -- the "Sirius" and the "Vega"  (the first, containing three Soviet cosmonauts; the second, containing a Soviet man and woman, an American and his humanoid robot) -- decide to land on the surface of Venus, leaving in orbit only one person -- the woman, Mashenka -- to keep orbit and maintain contact with Earth.  Venus turns out to be rich in life:  it's populated by animals, including dinosaurs.  The expedition on Venus gets into difficulties and the second crew is sent to rescue them.  They face pterodactyls; a brontosaurus; they submerge themselves in a Venusian ocean, on the bottom of which are odd-looking reefs.  In the end, the spacemen are rescued just as John, the robot with a sense of self-preservation, is about to throw the spacemen into some lava to save itself.

Snímek vypráví o dvou židovských chlapcích uprchlých z transportu do koncentračního tábora. The film begins with two boys escaping from a train transporting prisoners of a concentration camp to, what is assumed to be, another camp. Little dialogue is employed in the film as the boys wander through unfamiliar terrain in the Sudetenland. Interwoven in the film are dreams, memories, hallucinations, fantasies and flashbacks. Eventually, the boys are captured by local Volksdeutsche and we are led to believe, that they will be executed by these old men. However, the film’s ending is ambiguous: either the boys are spared in a mock execution or they’re walking away into the afterlife. IVAN’S CHILDHOOD (1962):After a brief dream sequence, Ivan Bondarev, a 12-year-old Russian boy, wakes up and crosses a war-torn landscape to a swamp, then swims across a river. On the other side, he is seized by Russian soldiers and brought to the young Lieutenant Galtsev, who interrogates him. The boy insists that he call "Number 51 at Headquarters" and report his presence. Galtsev is reluctant, but when he eventually makes the call, he is told by Lieutenant-Colonel Gryaznov to give the boy pencil and paper to make his report, which will be given the highest priority, and to treat him well. Through a series of dream sequences and conversations between different characters, it is revealed that Ivan’s mother and sister (and probably his father, a border guard) have been killed by German soldiers. He got away and joined a group of partisans. Burning for revenge, Ivan insists on fighting on the front line. Taking advantage of his small size, he is successful on reconnaissance missions. Gryaznov and the other soldiers grow fond of him and want to send him to a military school. They give up their idea when Ivan tries to run away and rejoin the partisans. He is determined to avenge the death of his family and others, such as those killed at the Maly Trostenets extermination camp.

DER BETTLER VOM KOLNER DOM  (1927)  +  LA FILLE DE L'EAU  (1925)  * with switchable English and German subtitles *

Interpol agent Tom Wilkens checks into the exclusive Hotel Excelsior in Cologne -- disguised as a wealthy Indian industrialist -- to foil a band of thieves led by a crook disguised as a beggar.  The very wealthy Mabel Strong is also staying in the hotel, which looks out on the city's famous cathedral.  The thieves are interested in laying their clutches on her, too; and they have accomplices in the hotel to help them achieve their ends.

LA FILLE DE L'EAU  (1925):

The lonely child Gudule lives on a canal barge with her sailor father and her abusive Uncle Jeff.  When the child's father drowns, Gudule has no one else left in the world except Jeff.  The uncle squanders the girl's inheritance and tries to rape her.  Gudule flees and takes refuge with two gypsies, a young poacher, 'the Weasel', and his mother 'Dogfish'.  But Weasel's mischief angers the local farmers, who set their family caravan on fire.  Gudule flees and falls into a pit, falling asleep with exhaustion and sinking into strange dreams.  Georges Raynal, the son of the region's major landowner, finds the girl and starts caring for her.  When she's found by Uncle Jeff, who tries to extort money from her, she turns to George for help.

TURKSIB  (1929)  + CHILD OF THE BIG CITY  (1914)

The title of this Russian documentary refers to the railroad linking Turkestan and Siberia. Produced on a grand scale, the film recounts the construction of this important transportation link, using actual newsreel footage and tons of stock shots from previous Soviet propaganda films. The "plot" is dictated by the progress of the construction, and as such has its dull patches from time to time. Of the many memorable scenes, several are standouts, including a harrowing sandstorm, obviously filmed at great personal risk to the camera crew. Filmed silent, Turksib was released in the U.S. with live musical accompaniment.

In Child of the Big City, seamstress Mary dreams of a better life in luxury instead of her badly paid job in a sweatshop. Her dreams come true, when she draws the attention of Victor, a bourgeoisie, who invites her for dinner and makes her a lady. But, about a year later, she has become tired of him, and thanks to her, his money is almost gone. When he asks for settling down outside the big city, where his money should be enough for a modest living, she breaks with him and picks up a new lover. A year later, Victor is living in a shabby, cold room under the roof, still trying to meet her again --- something she definitely refuses to entertain.

Golgotha is a 1935 French film about the death of Jesus Christ.   It was directed by Julien Duvivier, and stars Harry Baur as Herod and Jean Gabin as Pontius Pilate.   Robert le Vigan plays Christ.   It opened in the U.S. in 1937.  Le Vigan's performance marks the first direct portrayal of Christ in a sound film.   As opposed to most of his appearances onscreen, Jesus is seen speaking and in closeup, not merely from a distance as in Ben-Hur or The Robe.

Unfortunately, this movie will offend a number of people:  Many of the Jews in leading roles look stereotypical of the times and could have stepped right out of the costume sets of Jud Suss or Der Ewige Jude.  Jesus Christ looks as "aryan" as the Romans who are seemingly bullied into persecuting him and some of the statements -- especially concerning financial transactions, as well as the famous exhortation that Jesus' blood will be upon the heads of the Jews and their children -- are extremely inflammatory and politically incorrect by today's standards.  Nonetheless, it was not the purposeful intention of the director to inflame anti-Semitic passion; this film is simply a mirror of the times and its prejudices.

This movie is based loosely on the biography of the circus pioneer, Erns Jakob Renz. The two circus performers Harms and Renz care for the young orphan Bettina, after her grandfather is killed while practicing an act with a bear (hey! Yogi wants the pic-i-nick basket; you give it to him!). The three take off to Berlin to open their own circus. After a number of difficulties --- none of them with bears, luckily --- they build a reputation among their Berliner fans.  Soon, Bettina gets older and the two men's thoughts towards her grow from surrogate fathers to something that would have landed them in jail had the internet been around back then and they posted their desires and photos of her online.  There are a number of close calls both in their personal lives and with their French rivals; but soon, everyone pulls together for the good of the circus and to avoid ending up on the sex offender registry.

ROTATION  (1949)  * with switchable English subtitles *

The machinist Behnke has little interest in politics.  For the benefit of his family, he's come to terms with the NSDAP running the show in Germany.  He's convinced by his brother-in-law, however, to repair a printing press, on which anti-fascist leaflets are being produced.  He takes some of these leaflets home ... and is promptly betrayed to the Gestapo by his son, a fanatical member of the Hitler Youth.  After being tortured and interrogated, Behnke ends up in Moabit Prison.  He's liberated by Russian soldiers at the end of the War.  His wife, however, is dead and his son's a POW.  When Helmut returns from his internment in Russia, Behnke forgives him for his past deeds.
