Vienna, at the turn of the 19th into the 20th Century: the farmer's daughter Anuschka loses her farm after the death of her father, who was in debt to the rich, hard-hearted farmer Nowarek and her adorable son, Jaro. Anuschka journeys to Vienna to ask help from the surgeon Felix von Hartberg, who once operated on her father. Professor von Hartberg hires her as a maid. His wife Eva, however, flirts big time with the lawyer, Dr. Sasha Wendt and as a token of her lust, sends him her husband's gold lighter. Through a series of stupid coincidences, this very lighter ends up in Anuschka's possession, whereby von Hartberg accuses her of stealing and promptly fires her.

Towards the end of the 18th Century: Sir Richard Fordyke is returning back to his family estate from his honeymoon with his second wife, but not everyone in the village is pleased to see him. A girl was murdered, and her last words pointed to the returning nobleman. Since his first wife also died under mysterious circumstances --- "falling" out of a window --- it doesn't take long for the peasants to start babbling about the murdered girl, the dead first wife ... and now more murders, among them, Sir Richard's father. A white lady's been appearing often and has been pursuing Sir Richard on horseback, accusing him of being a murderer.

Thomas Bruck, an aging composer, returns to his native Vienna after a decade of absence. As before, he takes lodgings with his old friend Hanna von Hooven, who has also dedicated her life to music. The singing teacher lives under the same roof with her son Walter, who has made a name for himself as a conductor. Hanna notices that old Bruck has changed considerably and hasn't composed anything for a long time. Through Hanna, Thomas one day meets her student, the young Japanese woman Namiko Sanada. Bruck is fascinated by the sound of her singing voice and soon falls in love with the woman, who is decades younger than him.

Countess Alexandra happens to drop into the pub, too and is thought to be a model by the sponsor of the prize, Count Meredith. Victor soon has to save her from an embarrassing misunderstanding. The two men insult each other and Victor loses his prize.

He is all the more thrilled when he finds out that Ashok is indeed taking more than an average interest in Bela and has even given her some jewelry. The second dad is Jamnadas, the father of Usha, who is wealthy. He would like Usha to marry Vinod, the son of Ganga Prasad, but Usha is in love with Ashok. Who will Ashok marry?
1848. Europe is seething with revolutions against tyrannical rulers breaking out everywhere. In the Austrian Empire, the emperor even abdicates the throne! A regiment of Hungarian hussars are stationed in Galician Poland, serving out their enlistment time in the Imperial Austrian Army. Soon, news will come that not only has a rebellion against Austrian begun in Galicia, but back in Budapest, too. The hussars wish to return to Hungary, but their superiors in Vienna have no intention of allowing that, knowing full well that they'd fight on the side of the revolution and not maintain their loyalty to the Austrians. When they receive orders to fire on rebelling Poles in Krakow, they refuse and head back to their homes. Filled with now archaic notions of honor and duty, the 80 men are hunted down and slaughtered by their commanders.
Count Erwin Haldern is compelled to go to a Chanson-Evening organized by the singer Pauline, because his uncle invited him. It turns out not to be so big an imposition, because while there, Erwin gets to know Stine, Pauline's younger sister. It's love at first sight for both of them. In medieval Russia, the Snow Maiden refuses to depart with Father Frost to Siberia for warmer months, lured as she is by the happy villagers enjoying a Shrovetide celebration in the snow. He agrees to let her enjoy spring with the villagers, but only after entrusting her safety to the wood genies of the forest, strange, moss-covered creatures who emerge from shrubs and swamp. In the village, the Snow Maiden falls under the thrall of an elderly couple in poverty who wishes to sell her beauty for a rich dowry. Though the frosty Snow Maiden cannot love, she quickly becomes attached to the young singer Lel, who is smitten with her, and whose songs she admires. When a rich merchant, Misghir, arrives (also singing) from upriver, he quickly scorns his fianc e Kupava for the Snow Maiden. Tsar Berendey tells Misghir that he cannot have the girl unless she returns his affections, but the merchant only frightens the snow-spirit; at one point Misghir becomes so desperate in his obsession for the unobtainable Snow Maiden that he nearly rapes her. Lel, meanwhile, falls in love with Kupava, and the Snow Maiden, despairing, turns to her mother, Spring, to learn the gift of love. In doing so as the old folktale goes she melts away, seen here in a symbolic shot of the maiden dissolving in a beam of sunlight. Misghir dies of grief.
While most of the world was content in deluding themselves into believing that the deportation of the Jews "to the East" meant nothing more than their resettlement and utilization in labor camps by the Germans, some people still dared to say out loud that the Germans were practicing genocide against the deportees. Meant to quell these rumors and to aid in the smooth functioning of the deportation of the Jews, the Nazis set up a "model ghetto" in Terezin, north of Prague in the early 1940s. Its existence was meant to prove to the world that the Jews were being handled correctly and that the stories about atrocities were just Allied propaganda. But the so-called model ghetto in the Protektorat was a sham: in back alleys, out of sight of the very few visitors who were allowed to tour Theresienstadt, were the overcrowded and filthy barracks, which held the starving populace, waiting for their turn to be deported to the East ... and the gas chambers of the extermination camps in occupied Poland.
Jerry wants to become a clown, which is why he's running a circus with his friend Pete. Too bad the role of the clown's already been given to someone else; so Jerry has to put off his dream for a bit, while he works as the circus' lion tamer. Bad move that, though: he's such a clumsy klutz that the circus is going all to hell! Luckily, for both Jerry and the circus, the clown is unable to perform on opening night, so Jerry will get his chance after all.

Andr is an actor, but, like most actors, he's unemployed. Since he has to earn a living, he works at "The Red Cat", entertaining tourists as a sinister gang leader. It's there that he gets to know Gloria, the beautiful daughter of the American jeweler, Jefferson. Gloria's father has just acquired the famous "Halifax Diamond", which the crook Pitou intends to steal. When the expensive gem disappears, Andr ends up being the top suspect in the theft of the diamond. The gifted actor thus has to play a number of roles and go through many complications to find the real culprit.

Librarian Martha Heyer --- in her early 30s and still a virgin --- goes on holiday to Rome with her rather cool and distant father. There, he suffers a heart attack on the Spanish Steps (tsk tsk ... gotta do more cardio as you get older). With daddy out of the way, Martha has a fleeting encounter with a handsome man in the courtyard of the German embassy. Little does she know that this chance meeting will have serious consequences for her. Returning back to the Fatherland, she meets him again at a wedding party and they themselves marry shortly thereafter. Having had a rather domineering father, Martha should be prepared for her new husband's charismatic and controlling personality. She's not. And on their honeymoon, he systematically begins tormenting Martha and training her to function according to his views on life.

DIE BRUDER KARAMASOFF (1921): The story of old brawler and drunkard Karamazov and his dissimilar sons, as well as of Grushenka, the prostitute who sows discord in the family. Dmitri Karamazov wants to marry his fiancee, Katerina, but to do so, he needs to deposit 3,000 rublei with his regiment in Moscow. Dmitri doesn't have that much money, however, and therefore travels to his father to ask him for the sum. His father ows his son money, but is unwilling to give it to him. Instead, daddy would rather keep the money and chase after women; especially the beautiful prostitute Grushenka, whom the delusional old fool is convinced he's going to marry. Erz hlt wird die Geschichte vom alten Rauf- und Trunkenbold Karamasoff und seinen ungleichen S hnen und der Unfrieden in der Familie stiftenden Hure Gruschenka. Dimitri Karamasoff will seine Braut Katharina, genannt Katja, heiraten. Daf r muss er in seinem Moskauer Regiment den Betrag von 3000 Rubel hinterlegen. DIE GELIEBTE ROSWOLSKYS (1921): Mary Verhag ain't the youngest chick in the Grand Theater's chorus, but still manages to capture the hearts of many men. Her admirers are hot for her tail, but even the theater's director and conductor are turned away without much ado. Mary really does want to advance her career and make more money, but not via the bedroom. It doesn't help that her coworkers are jealous of her popularity, and this provides the ammunition for the director to fire her. Her subsequent financial distress, which reminds her of the fate of her younger sister Martha --- a poorly-paid teacher --- seems to overwhelming to Mary that she contemplates suicide. So she stands on the bank of a river, wondering whether she should jump in.

Kitty Holm is a little secretary in a car shop in Berlin and dreams of becoming a grand dame one day. One day, she's told to drive a car to Sophienbad for Ria, the daughter of a rich cotton merchant. On the way, she gets to know Baron Heinz von Wolfenstein, who thinks Kitty's a rich countess. At first, Kitty gets a blast out of playing the fine lady; but when the tiny swindle blows up in her face, she returns to Berlin ashamed. In the meantime, Ria has become engaged to Heinz' brother, Wolf. When Kitty finds out that Ria is going to marry Baron von Wolfenstein, she believes the said baron is Heinz and she is deeply saddened. But then everything is cleared up: Ria marries Wolf; Kitty gets Heinz; and finally, she becomes a grand dame for real.

FOREST OF THE HANGED (1964) * with switchable English subtitles * . In 1916, ethnic Romanian Apostol Bologa is a Lieutenant in the Habsburg Army and reports for duty at the front, determined to do his duty. Upon his arrival, he meets a fellow officer, Captain Klapka, and informs him of the upcoming execution of Lieutenant Svoboda, who tried to desert to the enemy. Lieutenant Bologa shows his satisfaction at having been a member of the court martial that convicted Svoboda to death by hanging. After all, they all took an oath of loyalty to the Habsburgs. Despite Bologa's loyal bravado, the fact that their enemy is the Romanian Army doesn't escape him. The Romanian lines are just a few yards away and being a Romanian himself, Bologa longs for his native Romania. More and more, Bologa agonizes over loyalty and desertion to his Romanian brethren. His friend, Captain Klapka, reminds him of the severe penalty for desertion.
Two men, Philip Whittemore and Thorpe, both go to the Northwest to gain the right-of-way for their railroad company from Mr. D'Arcambal. Whittemore arrives first and D'Arcambal refuses to meet with him, that is, until Whittemore later saves his daughter, Jeanne, from going over the rapids. Then Thorpe arrives and tries to use force by kidnapping Jeanne and insisting that he is her father.
ALMENRAUSCH UND EDELWEISS (1957)
Alles beginnt mit einer harmlosen Erbschafts-Benachrichtigung: Friedl Meier, Besitzerin einer kleinen Landpension, soll einen stattlichen Dollarbetrag erben. Eigentlich eine erfreuliche Sache, aber dummerweise ist die Erbschaftsurkunde auf den Namen Meyer mit y ausgestellt, den Nachnamen ihres einstigen Br utigams Ferdinand, Vater ihrer Tochter Maresi den die junge Frau allerdings nie kennengelernt hat. Von ihrer Tochter zur Rede gestellt, muss Friedl ihr gestehen, dass sie nie mit Ferdinand verheiratet war. Er hatte seinerzeit die Hochzeit verschlafen, worauf Friedl sich im Streit von ihm getrennt hatte. Von diesem Moment an hat Maresi nur noch ein Ziel: Ihren Vater aufzusuchen und ihre Eltern 19 Jahre nach dem missgl ckten ersten Versuch doch noch vor den Traualtar zu bekommen. Wie der Zufall es will, verbringt Ferdinand seinen Urlaub im nahe gelegenen Hotel Almenrausch.
It all started with an innocent notification about an inheritance. Friedl Meier, the owner of a small country inn, is to inherit a nice sum of Dollars. Hardly bad news, except the notification has the name Meier spelled with a "y" (hence, "Meyer"), which is the last name of her one-time husband-to-be, Ferdinand. He's also the father of Friedl's daughter, Maresi, whom he's never met. Called to account by her daughter, Friedl has to admit to her that she never married Ferdinand. Apparently, he slept through the wedding and after an argument between the two, Friedl gave him the boot. From that moment on, Maresi had only one goal in mind: to find her father and get her parents to once more walk down the aisle nineteen years after the first, failed attempt. As luck would have it, Ferdinand's spending his vacation at nearby Hotel Almenrausch.
France has been defeated. The period of hardship, humiliation --- and collaboration --- begins. The newsreels on this DVD are all from Vichy and occupied France, covering October 1940 to October 1942.
Aviya is the only Israeli-born girl among her schoolmates in a boarding school in Israel, circa 1953 (the rest are Holocaust survivors from various European countries). The public debate on the issue of accepting German reparations for Nazi atrocities awakens the dormant individual memories of each of the youths and creates sharp conflicts which influence their coming-of-age, with its fears, dreams, problems of identity, and first love. Aviya determined to find the tomb of her father, who died before she was born, while her mother in a mental hospital refuses to recall her painful past.
In the last years of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Bogumil Zappler, a Bohemian from a town close to Prague and a minor official in the vast bureaucratic apparatus of the Habsburg monarchy, is transferred to the Adriatic city of Maromir to serve as a station master and telegraph operator --- this, in spite of knowing nothing about seafaring! Already a bit senile and not particularly proficient in foreign languages, he receives a telegram which reads, "Begin hospital construction immediately, urgent!", and translates it to read, "Capture spies, urgent!" This throws the entire naval base into turmoil.

This story takes place in the 1950s in the town of Villar del Rio. The residents there are happy. The Americans are supposed to visit the town in conjunction with the distribution of Marshall Plan funds in Spain. Once the news of the impending visit is announced, the daily life of the villagers, their mayor and their priest will be focused completely on preparing for the expected visit. When Barnier threatens to report this to the police, Martin points out that as a consequence of the fraud Barnier has now submitted false income statements to the tax office, a serious crime. Barnier has no choice but to give in to blackmail and he agrees to give Martin the raise and name him vice-president of the firm. Martin then reveals that the young woman whom he intends to marry is Barnier's daughter. In order to recover his sixty million francs, Barnier asks Martin to give back the stolen monies so that he can give them to his daughter as a wedding present.
