In a village on the Volga in pre-revolutionary Russia, a young merchant's wife falls in love with Artem, a porter, and wants to leave her husband to go to the countryside with her beloved. The jealous husband hires a group of thugs to kill Artem, but the man miraculously survives the attack and is found by a Jewish shoemaker, Chaim, who is openly despised by the villagers. While recovering from his wounds, Artem overhears revolutionaries who have gathered at Chaim's home to read forbidden political literature.
A quick look into how NOT to behave in real life: Clemens Hagen is an operetta singer, who's all the rage among teenagers (Teens? Operetta? Yeah, okay.). But does he appreciate that he looks like he's in his 50s and is adored by obviously blind kiddie-fans? No, of course not! He wants peace and quiet and so decides to do what every reasonable person would do: go incognito as a managing director to a hotel on Lake Constanz. And just as quickly as the film jumps around, he "falls in love" instantaneously with the owner of the hotel, a supposedly mid-20s, provincial lady who also looks like she's pushing her late 40s and has a permanent scowl on her face, as if she were only allowed to eat lemons on her Keto diet. But here's the problem: this supposed 20s-something is being chased by an elderly baron she couldn't be the slightest bit interested in. But that's okay: she's more than happy to marry for practical reasons; especially where money's involved. And the old man's okay with that, too. But Kathrein falls in love with Clemens ... or rather, with the man he's impersonating. She dare not discover he's an artist, because one of them dumped her mother when she got pregnant with Kathrein. Enter the hotel's porter, an older man (or is he in his 20s, too; in this film, who knows?) who's into horoscopes; and Micki, the baron's daughter, who has no issues blackmailing Clemens to get him to recommend her for a spot in the Eurovision contest; never mind that her voice is so mediocre that it's rumored Mama Cass choked on a ham sandwich after hearing her sing!

The sequel to Die Trapp Familie hardly lightens the mood for fans of the von Trapp Family Singers. The Trapps have left Austria and are now in the United States. But the Land of Unlimited Possibilities turns out to be anything but for our hapless heroes. Though the American public has demonstrated countless times, that they'll pay anything to hear Volkslieder and other pop songs, the family is on the verge of being penniless and suicidal, thanks to their priest/agent, who's determined to teach Americans to appreciate great church music ... no matter how much his "cultural mission" pushes the family to starvation. Only the insistence of paying patrons that they drop the holy-roller music and the guffaws of the audience abandoning their shows finally convinces Maria, that it's time to start entertaining the paying public and give Palestrina a rest.
Moscow in the 1970s. There's a love triangle between two young men and a girl who study at the same university. They argue, make up, and face their first disappointments and victories. After a long period of study, Jakob Lechner returns to his village as a newly graduated economist. During his absence, his father, Alois Lechner, a member of the state parliament and a farmer, and innkeeper and mayor Huber have decided that their two children should marry. Jakob, however, has no intention of marrying the young Anni Huber. Instead, he finds himself drawn to Liesl, a dairymaid who, along with her little brother Hansl, has been taken in by Lechner. Both work for him as a maid and a shepherd boy, living in an alpine hut. The village priest wants to stage a nativity play to celebrate the restoration of the statue of the Virgin Mary in the church. Although Lechner recommends Anni for the role of the Virgin Mary, the priest decides to give Liesl the part. Uncertain but proud, she accepts the role and now rehearses diligently with the villagers participating in the play. Alois, in turn, forbids Jakob from seeing Liesl. After leaving for a state parliament session, Alois nevertheless goes up to the alpine pasture to help Hansl search for a lost sheep. Alois is so outraged by this disobedience that he throws Jakob out. Jakob then moves to the county seat.

Unsicher, aber stolz bernimmt sie die Rolle und bt nun eifrig mit der am St ck teilnehmenden Dorfgemeinschaft. Alois wiederum verbietet Jakob den Umgang mit Liesl. Als er zu einer Landtagssitzung abgereist ist, geht Alois dennoch auf die Alm, um Hansl bei der Suche nach einem verlorenen Schaf zu helfen. Alois ist ber die Gehorsamsverweigerung so emp rt, dass er Jakob hinauswirft. Der zieht in die Kreisstadt.
Michael Tetjus, the world-famous race car driver from the German D.A. Works , returns from the USA, where he s broken the world s record in automobile racing. He s received like a hero at Berlin s airport and is only able to exchange a few words with his wife, the famous actress Katja Lorenz, before both of them attend to their duties: Katja has to make a recording at the Atelier, and Tetjus friend Zoger is waiting for him, the leading engineer at the testing section of D.A. Works. Zoger has been working for month on a problem of great interest to Tetjus: the expolsive-turbine. Unfortunately, Zoger is on the wrong track and only the suggestions of his friend Tetjus and the assistant Enja Wiggers convinces him, that he has to start from scratch.
Raskolnikov follows an unusual moral code. A combination of vigilantism and hubris fuels his decision to aid a hapless prostitute by removing her antagonist, a local merchant. Raskolnikov is locked up for the murder, and while he does not deny committing the crime, he tries to persuade the police that he should not be charged.
There are two boys in the house of Yli-Koskela: Artturi manages rooms and Aarne spends his life aimlessly. When Aarne returns home, he punches a neighbor in the eye to please Lea, whom Arrturi wants for his wife. Tension between the two brothers increases and suspicious Arrturi doesn't trust Aarne's affections for Lea. Arrturi starts drinking, but Aarne has the lion's share of problems when he gets into a fight at a card game and the object of his anger ends up falling into raging rapids. Aarne thinks he's killed the guy, but Arrturi was watching the whole thing and saved the man from drowning. And, as you expected, he ends up telling Lea that her boy toy is a murderer.

But dreams soon fade with his father's death while John is still a lad. Like many before him, John sets out to make his mark in New York City, but ends up a faceless worker (#137) in a large business. Still, he is happy with his fate and soon meets a young woman named Mary on a blind double-date. Things take their course and they soon marry and live in a small apartment. Soon John is bickering with Mary and finds that he has no love for the in-laws. When the marriage looks like a bust, he finds that Mary is pregnant and he stays. After 5 years, he has a son and a daughter and the same dead-end job. When tragedy strikes, John must find the conviction to continue or lose what little he has left.
LONESOME (1928): A lonesome boy and a lonesome girl meet accidentally on their Saturday off at Coney Island. It's love at first sight, but in the thrill and bewilderment of their escape from loneliness and sudden romance, they don't even realize they don't even know each other's names until a fire breaks out and they are separated.

Benedict and Tracey van Der Byl are the offspring of wealthy Hendrich van der Byl, who owns and operates Van der Byl Diamond Mines, one of the smaller yet still very lucrative diamond mining operations in South Africa. Benedict and Tracey grew up with Johnny Lance, who Hendrich brought into their house when orphaned and has treated him like another son, which Benedict has always resented. While Benedict is a ne'er do well who spends his time chasing women, and on the side steals a diamond here and there from the company to give to whomever his female companion is at the time, Johnny, who has overshadowed Benedict all of their lives, has learned the business, and is one of the most respected diamond men in the country. With what Johnny believes is a large cache of diamonds sitting within the reef at Thunderbolt Gap which the larger mining operations have the rights, he has developed Kingfisher, a new vessel which he believes will revolutionize the dredging for such diamonds. The bank has loaned the company over two million dollars thus far, with Kingfisher actually being operational within sight. When Hendrich receives a terminal medical diagnosis which he tells no one in his family, he hands over the reins of the company one-third each to Benedict, Tracey, and Johnny. Benedict assumes the role of President and C.E.O. in Hendrich giving him the chance to prove himself, something that Benedict said he wanted. Tracey's share is held in a trust controlled by Benedict. And Johnny's share is solely within the realm of Kingfisher and the dredging operation, he needing to negotiate further with the bank for any additional capital to complete the vessel and make it operational.
Volka, a 12-year-old Soviet Young Pioneer, discovers an ancient vessel at the bottom of a river. When he opens it, a genie emerges. He calls himself Hassan Abdul-rahman ibn Khattab, but Volka renames him Khottabych. Khottabych later claims to be 3,732 years and 5 months old. The grateful Khottabych is ready to fulfill any of Volka's wishes, but it becomes clear that Volka should use the powers of the genie carefully, for they can have some unforeseen undesirable results. A feel-good story intended to teach about the good of socialism and social responsibility and the evils of capitalism and selfishness. Amusingly, the genie's failures, meant to represent the ills of non-socialist societies, more reflect the failures in what was the real USSR-Soviet state.
Bank director Torwald is distressed to learn that the fim of his deceased friend, Junker & Son, is doing poorly. Creditors are not being paid, because Fred Junker, the son in Junker & Son , knows more about living the high life than conducting a business. When Fred puts up his motorboat for sale, Torwald comes up with an idea. Because he doesn t know Fred, he sends his daughter Veronica to the boat house to find out something about the boy. But instead, the two fall head over heels with each other, which the father is not at all happy about. He demands Fred marry his daughter. Veronica is furious and refuses to marry, even though she s now expecting a child.
Charlie, a very gifted, young acrobat, cannot find employment. A dance and colleague, whom he trained, has gotten him a job as a stagehand at a vaudeville theatre. After a number of chaotic events and some highs and lows -- none of which ever discourages him -- his hour arrives: an act can't go on and "Akrobat schooon" can finally make his grand entrance.

The Swedish power industrialist Percy Patterson has disappeared after a secret meeting. One does not know whether to suspect an accident or foul play. One thing is known: the journalist Nilsen helped him to flee from a threatening sentence of punishment. Patterson's daughter is determined to prove the innocence of her father and combs all of Europe looking for him. Nilsen is hunting for him, too. But Patterson is not prepared to be found all that easily and he's got more changes of costume than a rockette at Radio City Music Hall!

Two librettists arrive and pluck people living in a bare valley, in order to turn them into operetta characters. The two librettists come up with a plot, in which selected young men and women are designated into two opposing groups, both claiming ownership and intending to take possession and restore a house in ruin. Their fierce battle is anticipated to turn into blissful love by the end. While the librettists attempt to shepherd judiciously the youngsters' relationships in the desired direction, the enactment is constantly derailed. Whenever the characters' instincts follow natural impulses, the creators relentlessly correct digressions, reverse undesired developments, sometimes by rewinding time and reenacting events, shaped into their liking. The Ageless Goddess of operetta appears and irons out the scheme by performing a Socialist Realist lullaby from 1947. Finally, all resemblance to the characters' original individuality is converted into clich s of operetta characters. The couples and their adversaries have been fixed into their happy matrimonial lives ever after.
The title refers to the Feuerzangenbowle punch consumed by a group of gentlemen in the opening scene. While exchanging nostalgic stories about their schooldays, the successful young writer Dr. Johannes Pfeiffer realizes he missed out on something because he was taught at home and never attended school. He decides to make up for it by masquerading as a student at a small town high school and quickly gains a reputation as a prankster. Together with his classmates, he torments his professors Crey, B mmel and Headmaster Knauer with adolescent mischief. His girlfriend Marion unsuccessfully tries to persuade him to give up his foolish charade. Eventually, he falls in love with the headmaster s daughter and discloses his identity after provoking the teachers into expelling him from school.

As always, the brilliance in Eisenstein's films was not limited to the camerawork, but could be found in the subtlety of the message and how it was successfully pandered off onto the viewer. In this case, the message is collectivization in Stalinist Russia. In the theoretical sense of Soviet Communism, it's hard to argue with the film's message that collectivization is good for everyone and certainly just. And in comparison to what life in Czarist Russia was like for the masses, it's a message hard to argue with. However, if you aren't familiar with Soviet history, do some reading before you view the film: the reality was very far from what is portrayed here. Nonetheless, the enthusiasm and optimism shown in the film could possibly influence the uninitiated to view the USSR of the times in a very positive light. THAT is the brilliance of Eisenstein!
Madeleine and Paul have just made their way home after their honeymoon and are looking forward to being alone together. Unfortunately, it's not to be: Paul has gotten a telegram from his old flame Tangolita, who has no intention of leaving the newlyweds in peace. Before breaking up, Tangolita extracted a promise from Paul to go out on a date whenever she so demanded ... and now it's payback time.

The evil-doer is the pickpocket known as "Ground Ice". With the help of "Gustav with the Horn" and his friends, Emil manages to stay on the heels of Mr. Ground Ice. More and more children take part in the pursuit and Ground Ice is finally cornered in a bank. When the police are called to take in the culprit, Emil discovers there's a 100 Mark reward for his capture. Now he's become the Hero of the Day.

1853. Duke Max of Bavaria lives with his wife and his two daughters Helene, known as Nene , and Elisabeth, Sissi in Possenhofen on Starnberger See. The sister of his wife Ludovica, Archduchess Sophia, is the mother of the young Austrian Emperor, Franz Josef. One day, Sophie informs her sister of her intention to marry off Franz to Helene. Engrossing and uncompromising documentary film about the fight against syphilis made back at a time when treatment for the disease was in its early stages. Through the use of rather heavy-handed drama, this rather "subtle" Teutonic melodrama makes its point ... and then some! Though unintended, the film vividly reveals how the extremely difficult socio-economic problems of the Weimar Era led to, among other things, serious medical repercussions. Don't expect to be in the mood to party afterwards.
Two middle-aged men work as caretakers on an isolated dam construction site high in the snow-capped Italian Alps. When one of them leaves for the valley to spend Christmas vacation with his family he is temporarily replaced with an adolescent boy. The other man is both annoyed and intrigued by the boy and his habits: he listens to loud music, sleeps too long in the mornings and doesn't drink any alcohol. They barely speak to one another in the first couple of days. But when an avalanche cuts their small hut from electricity they slowly start growing more fond of each other.
A working-class love story set in and around the London Underground of the 1920s. Two men gentle Bill and brash Bert meet and are attracted to the same woman on the same day at the same Underground station. But the lady chooses Bill, and Bert isn t the type to take rejection lightly.
The delegates from Poland arrive in Dresden to ask Kosciuszko to come back and stand at the head of the uprising. In Krakow, funds for an army are being raised; the peasants are preparing to fight. Kosciuszko arrives in Krakow and is made leader of the uprising. He goes to RacĊawice; there's a nice battle, victory, and a parade. Intertwined into these events is a story about the love of Lieutenant Jan Milewski for Hanka, whose uncle promised her to another.
In Castle Vogeloed, a few aristocrats are awaiting Baroness Safferstatt. But first, Count Oetsch invites himself. Everyone thinks he murdered his brother, Baroness Safferstatt's first husband, three years ago. So, he is rather undesirable. But Oetsch stays; arguing he is not the murderer and will find the real one.
United Newsreel selections from the year 1943, mainly concentrating on the effort of the United States in WWII, but also covering events on other fields of the War. Unfortunately, the newsreels are grouped alphabetically by subject and not by date, so there is no particular chronological order to them. Nonetheless, very interesting material.
THE FINEST HOURS (1964): A biography about Winston Churchill shown through re-creations and historical film footage, narrated by Orson Welles and with voice-overs by actors for historical figures in the recreated scenes.
THE SPANISH EARTH (1937): Another documentary narrated by Orson Welles, this time on the opposite side of the spectrum from this DVDs first film: this time, an anti-fascist piece about the struggle of the Spanish Republican government against a rebellion by right-wing forces led by General Franco.
Broadway director Lloyd Lloyd and composer Dick Rayburn search for talent down South and discover singer Cindy Lou Bethany, who surprises them with her voice and striptease.
Hercules is called upon to fight seven golden giants summoned by the Dagger of Jae, sister of Juno (Hera), who dislikes Hercules "for certain family reasons." Hercules also fights to protect his princess love, but matters are complicated by her evil relative Milo, who has murdered her father the king but has tricked her into thinking it was someone else because she trusts him too much. Milo tricks Hercules into killing his friend, for which he is punished by his father Jove (Jupiter/Zeus) who takes away his enormous strength, because he has misused it. Milo is conspiring with his sorceress mother to take the throne for himself. Now only as strong as a mortal man, Hercules is overpowered when he tries to rescue the princess Ate (pronounced Ah-tay) from Milo and is then accused of being a fraud. Milo tries to kill both Hercules and Ate by chaining them to a giant wooden lever with spikes, complete with a cage over Hercules which he must support while rocks are piled on him: if he can hold it up, then he will prove himself the true Hercules (which he is) but if not, then he will be guilty and he and Ate will die together for conspiring to steal the throne and give it to an imposter.

A Ukrainian "Western" which retells the story of a Crimean Tatar folk hero who stood up to the Russian colonial authorities' abuse, pillaging, and exploitation of the indigenous people of Qirim. Apart from the storyline of Russian abuse, the film also shows the authentic world of the Crimean Tatars, who were brutally expelled after the Soviet reconquest of Crimea in 1944 from German occupation. Alim is based on a play by the Crimean writer Umer Ipci, whom the Soviets sent to a concentration camp and then imprisoned in a psychiatric ward. "Corrective psychiatry" was widely weaponized in the USSR to eliminate numerous indigenous artists and thinkers. The film's scriptwriter barely survived the Holodomor, the artificial famine created by the Soviets in Ukraine to break the peasants' resistance to collectivization, and the film's consultant, the founding father of modern Qirimli ethnography and the National Qirimli Museum, was murdered in a 1937 mass purge of Crimean intellectuals. The film's main lead was deported in 1944 from Crimea and was banned from ever acting again. He died in the 1950's, the location of his grave unknown. The film itself, which was widely praised in both the USSR and abroad, was banned in 1937 during the Great Purge.

Sedemondo succeeds his brother Licinio as king of Kindaor after having the former murdered by an arrow in the back. Soon thereafter, a messenger bearing a crown made with a nail from the true cross requests permission to cross the kingdom. The crown, by legend, will stay wherever injustice and corruption prevail. Sedemondo takes it to a gorge where it is swallowed by the earth. A wise, old woman prophesizes to the king that his wife will bear a daughter and Licinio's widow a son; that the two will fall in love; and that the son will take the kingdom away from Sedemondo. When he gets home, he is told that his wife has given birth to a boy (the daughter having been switched with the child of Licinio) and so believes the prophesy to be invalid. He raises both the boy Arminio and the girl Elsa. Twenty years later, a tournament is arranged to marry off the king's daughter and, unbeknownst to Sedemondo, the champion is going to be the very man, who'll fulfill the prophesy.

Shortly after a messenger on horseback hands the major a letter, the carriage is stopped by French militia and Korfes is arrested. He succeeds, however, in passing Johanna the mysterious letter.

The narrative concerns three shipwrecked people, two women and a man, adrift in a small boat on the open sea. In a series of flashbacks, they reveal to each other their stories and what they were trying to escape from when they took flight on the ship.
LAS HURDES (1927): Land Without Bread or Unpromised Land) is a 27-minute-long documentary film directed by Luis Bu uel and co-produced by Bu uel and Ramon Acin. The narration was written by Bu uel, Rafael Sanchez Ventura, and Pierre Unik, with cinematography by Eli Lotar. The film focuses on the Las Hurdes region of Spain, the mountainous area around the town La Alberca, and the intense poverty of its occupants. Bu uel, who made the film after reading the ethnographic study Las Jurdes: tude de g ographie humaine (1927) by Maurice Legendre, took a Surrealist approach to the notion of the anthropological expedition. The result was a travelogue in which the narrator s extreme (indeed, exaggerated) descriptions of human misery of Las Hurdes contrasts with his flat and disinterested manner. The film was originally silent, though Bu uel himself narrated when it was first shown. A French narration by actor Abel Jacquin was added in Paris in 1935. Bu uel used extracts of Johannes Brahms's Symphony No. 4 for the music. Bu uel slaughtered at least two animals to make Las Hurdes. He ordered an ailing donkey to be covered with honey so he could film it being stung to death by bees. Similarly, his crew shot a mountain goat and threw its carcass from a cliff for another sequence. The film was banned in Spain from 1933 to 1936.
Annelie was born on New Year's night, 1871 --- 15 minutes too late, for her parents had calculated that her birth would be on Midnight as the new year rang in. This 15 minute delay would turn out to be a matter of fate for the girl throughout the rest of her life. When she turned 16, she missed the horse-drawn train by 15 minutes: there was an accident and she stayed alive. Her appendix bursts and she is brought to the hospital ... but again, 15 minutes later than she should have been. She's saved; and in her delirium, she has a vision and sets out to now always be on time. She marries the doctor, who operated on her and she has three children. When the First World War breaks out, her husband and two sons must go to the front; Annelie becomes a Red Cross nurse.

But during the presentation, the stone disappears and Concha is suspected of stealing it. Finally, detective Adrian is able to get on the track of the real culprits. LADY WINDERMERE'S FAN (1925): Mrs Erlynne, the mother of Lady Windermere -- who doesn't know about her -- wants to be introduced in society. so she can marry Lord Augustus Lorton. Lord Windermere, who helped her with a cheque, invites her to his wife's birthday party; but Lady Windermere thinks she has reason to be jealous, so she decides to leave her husband and go to Lord Darlington, who is pining for her. Mrs Erlynne finds this out and tries to prevent this mistake, but her daughter leaves her fan in Lord Darlingtons residence.
In the first film to artistically depict the Slovak National Uprising of 1944, a young doctor and nurse shelter with a group of wounded partisans in an underground hideout until they are liberated by the Soviet Army. The theme of promoting friendship with the Red Army (and thus the USSR) permeates the entire film. For example, the story instills in the viewer the feeling that the Russian partisan Dugin, pictured as a handsome, kind-hearted Russian guy, never has a moral crisis and is always at the right place in the right place.
After five years of imprisonment for manslaughter, Robert is set free. His wife Marie, who works as a waitress, wanted to pick him up at the prison, but ends up not missing him the morning of his release. While Marie looks for her husband all around the city, Robert shows up at their apartment. He is observed, however, by an unknown man in the stairwell, who apparently intends to visit Marie. Becoming mistrustful, Robert goes to a caf . Memories of the deed, which landed him in prison come back to him: at the time, Marie was almost raped by her boss, but the assailant was instead strangled to death by Robert, who happened by chance to arrive during the act. When he leaves the caf , Robert once again sees the man, whom he believes to be his wife s lover. He tries to follow the man, but is hit by a car while doing so. Unhurt, Robert returns home. Marie is there waiting for him, desperate for any sign of life from her husband. Seeing him standing there, she is overjoyed. This spontaneous reaction of his wife convinces Robert, that Marie still loves him.

St. Kathrein is an idyllic mountain village in the Alps. The rich, and from all sides beloved, estate holder Martin is in love with the milkmaid Liesl, who is not from the village, comes from a humble background, and is rejected by all the townspeople. Then there s the innkeeper s daughter Johanna, who is fascinated with Martin and thus tries everything to split up Liesl and Martin.
This film is less about life in Germany during the War, than it is about life as an ordinary German soldier in the Wehrmacht. Consisting of both public and private films taken between 1939 and 1945, the life and fate of the Wehrmacht soldier and officer are shown on all the war fronts and with little censorship applied. Some films about the war in Europe from the Allied view is shown, too, but for the most part, this is the War as seen from "enemy" eyes ... in color.
