Wie in vielen anderen Emigrantenfilmen spielen auch hier soziale Zeitbezüge als Handlungsmatrix einer vordergründig heiteren Erzählung eine nicht unwesentliche Rolle. Die viereinhalb Musketiere der österreichisch-ungarischen Koproduktion sind Abenteurer ganz anderer Art: Geiger Fritz Körner, Trommler Sattler, Pianist Bender und Trompeter Maurer sowie Jonny, der Hund, bestreiten in den frühen dreißiger Jahren ihren Lebensunterhalt als Musikquartett – allerdings ohne festes Engagement. Warum sie trotz Arbeitslosigkeit, Armut und Hunger doch zu internationalem Erfolg, Ruhm und auch großer Liebe gelangen, hat unter anderem mit der geschliffenen Ironie und den hochtrabenden Pointen der besten Chargendarsteller der damaligen Zeit zu tun: Szöke Szakall, neben Hans Moser einer der berühmtesten Komödianten, Ernst Verebes, Felix Bressart, Karl Huszar- Puffy, Otto Wallburg … vereint unter Regisseur Leslie Kardos. Sie alle flohen ins Exil, Otto Wallburg wurde in Theresienstadt ermordet. Zuvor schufen sie künstlerisch hochwertiges, aber »unerwünschtes Kino«, das die gravierenden sozialen Probleme der Zeit mit einem feinsinnigen Lachen anzudeuten verstand.

As in many emigrant films, an alleged cheerful background does not detract from the true revelation of social events during the time of the film.  The four musketeers of this joint Austrian/Hungarian production are adventurers of a rather different kind:  there’s the violinist Fritz Korner; the drummer Sattler, the pianist Bender and the trumpeter Maurer.  And then there’s Johnny, the dog.  The four men are struggling to earn a living as a musical quartet, but have a very hard time finding employment.  How they manage, in spite of unemployment, poverty and hunger, to become an international success, and, on top of that, find praise and great love, has to do a great deal with the polished irony and overblown punch of the best batch performers of the time:  Szoke Szakall, next to Hans Moser, one of the most famous comedians of the time; Ernst Verebes; Felix Bressart, Karl Huszar and Otto Wallburg --- all brought together under the direction of Leslie Kardos.  They all fled the Third Reich into exile  (Otto Wallburg was murdered in Theresienstadt).  But before the deluge, they created an artistic quality without equal; and they responded to “unwanted films” by addressing the serious social issues of the time with a subtle laugh.
