The lawyer Brandt is having a grand old time at a ball, while his wife Else is away.  To the attractive artist, “the floating Virgin”, he pretends to be Dr. Winter, who happens to be engaged to Brandt’s sister-in-law.  In his carelessness, Brandt is the cause of many amorous confusions, which affect those closest to him, including a young detective and his worried uncle Lampe.

 Rechtsanwalt Brandt vergnügt sich in Abwesenheit seiner Frau Else auf einem Kostümball. Gegenüber einer attraktiven Artistin – »die schwebende Jungfrau « – gibt er sich dabei als sein Kompagnon Dr. Winter aus, der wiederum mit der Schwester von Brandts Ehefrau verlobt ist. Mit seiner Sorglosigkeit sorgt Brandt für zahlreiche amouröse Verwechslungen, die neben den unmittelbar Betroffenen auch noch eine jungen Detektivin sowie den besorgten Onkel Lampe auf den Plan rufen.
