In occupied Poland, German soldiers slaughter a woman, her son and daughter-in-law. The husband and his father escape the murder, because they're away in a forest. The young man decides to join the Underground, but at the first meeting, the Gestapo kills his go-between and chase after him. During his escape, he enters the apartment of a pregnant woman and helps her with the childbirth. He works in a typhus center, where he feeds lice after being immunized, so as to make more anti-typhus vaccine. But he has another purpose in all this: to penetrate into the hospital where a man, mistaken for him, has been tortured and whose misery the young man wants to end.
