Mountain guide Jakob Burkhart (Gustav Diessl) is a controversial figure.  He has rescued an alpine luxury hotel from an avalanche.  Therefore, he is recommended to guests as an especially good and enthusiastic mountain guide.  In the village below, he is considered a manipulator of the rather large estate his uncle left behind after his death, but which belongs to the municipality.  The truth is, of course, a bit more complicated:  In his uncle’s will it states, that, as an illegitimate child, he is entitled to the estate under only one condition --- he must be the first person to climb the eastern face of Monte Verita.  For this murderous proposal, Jakob can find no ally in town.  Not even Monika (Hertha Thiele), his mistress, can help him, since she’s been promised as a bride to Jakob’s adversary.

Bergführer Jakob Burkhart (Gustav Dießl) ist eine umstrittene Person. Das alpine Luxushotel hat er vor einer Lawine gerettet. Deshalb wird er dort als besonders tüchtiger und einsatzfreudiger Bergführer empfohlen. Im Dorf unten hält man ihn dagegen für einen Testamentshinterzieher, der das beträchtliche Erbe seines Onkels zurückhält, das doch der Gemeinde gehört. Die Wahrheit ist natürlich komplizierter: Im Testament seines Onkels steht, dass er als uneheliches Kind nur unter einer Bedingung sein Erbe antreten dürfe: Er müsse als Erster die Ostwand des Monte Verità durchsteigen. Jakob findet für dieses mörderische Vorhaben keinen Verbündeten im Ort. Nicht einmal Monika (Hertha Thiele), seine Geliebte, kann ihm beistehen, da sie Jakobs Widersacher als Braut versprochen ist.
