In Dusseldorf, Hans and Hanne get to know and love one another.  But Hans‘ parents, owners of an ironworks, are against the union and send their son off to Heidelberg to study.  And in fact, Hans gradually starts to forget about Hanne while off at school.  He gets to know the singer Bettina, with whom he wishes to spend the rest of his life.  But when his father dies, Hans returns home, where he once again meets Hanne and speaks to her.  Nevertheless, he is drawn back to Heidelberg and to Bettina.  When, upon the advice of a friend, she turns down his proposal of marriage, Hans believes he has missed out on better things in life.

In Düsseldorf lernen sich Hans und Hanne kennen und lieben. Doch Hans' Eltern, Besitzer eines Eisenhüttenwerks, sind gegen die Verbindung und schicken ihren Sohn zum Studium nach Heidelberg. Tatsächlich vergisst Hans dort Hanne allmählich. Er lernt die Sängerin Bettina kennen, mit der er sein Leben verbringen möchte. Aber nach dem Tod des Vaters kehrt er nach Hause zurück, wo er Hanne wiedertrifft und sich mit ihr ausspricht. Dennoch drängt ihn alles zurück nach Heidelberg zu Bettina. Als die auf Anraten eines Freundes seinen Heiratsantrag ablehnt, glaubt Hans, sein Leben sei verfehlt
