Set in a village in the Swiss Alps, Visages d’enfants begins with the funeral of the mayor’s wife, who has left behind two children, ten-year-old Jean, and his little sister Pierrette. In the film’s remarkable opening, the casket is brought down the stairs from the bedroom, as Jean watches, heartbreak visible on his face, and Pierrette, uncomprehending, plays. The boy is devastated by the loss of his mother and, a year later, is still mourning. Meanwhile, his father proposes to a local widow who has a daughter of her own. Concerned about how his grieving son will react, the father sends Jean on a trip with his godfather, the local priest. Jean returns to find his new stepmother and stepsister ensconced in the family home, where conflicts are inevitable.

No expense was spared in the attempt to make this movie as much an historical blockbuster as its American counterpart: thousands of troops, tons of explosives, and whole artillery units were filmed as extras in this drama, in which even 100 railway wagons of salt were imported to be used as snowflakes during the winter scenes. The film tells the story of a Pomeranian town subjected to the brutal attack of Napoleon's troops in his bid to conquer all of Prussia. (The movie was filmed on location in Kolberg).

Doch es ist ein sinnloses Durchhalten von Bürgern gegen die Übermacht der Truppen Napoleons. Erst die Schlacht bei Friedland bringt die Wende. Der Friede von Tilsit erzwingt den Waffenstillstand. Schill verlässt die Stadt, und nur sechs Jahre später wird Gneisenau zum entscheidenden Gegenspieler Napoleons.

At the turn of the century, a young waitress has a fling with a sailor on leave. He then departs for South Africa to fight in the Boer War and enjoys a distinguished career, and is also awarded a Victoria Cross for heroism in the First World War. Engaged to a high society heiress, his new status is changed by the sudden arrival of his long-lost daughter, the identical image of her now-deceased mother.
The film centers on the drunkard Colonel Carrasco, whose wife Marta leaves him, taking his young son. The child, Juan, grows into an admirable and well-mannered young man. Having been promoted to a higher rank of power amidst the Mexican Revolution, the indulgent and corrupt Colonel accepts a bribe to free a revolutionary, Felipe Martinez, from his prison. Martinez has been sentenced to execution at the hands of a firing squad. Carrasco asks to have the revolutionary replaced by absolutely anyone. In a twist of fate, that anyone turns out to be his own long lost son Juan. Upon receiving this news, Marta races to the prison and explains the predicament to Carrasco. He subsequently desperately attempts to prevent the gunning down of his son by his very own government officials.

This is repeated at other shows along the way and Quade's bright young assistant, "Small Fry", fancies himself as an amateur detective, and starts nosing around into the mystery and drags Quade along with him. When Lutheran pastor Roland retires, a young priest by the name of Roll will replace him. He plays the trumpet, loves Jazz and his methods are unconventional. From Day One, he offends the village notables, but doesn't care, since he's targeting kids especially and wants them back in the Church again. However the mayor agitates against him and manages to endanger Roll's success. The conflict leads to vandalism and open violence against Roll.

A rich widow is found dead of gas poisoning in her apartment in Helsinki. At first, the death is thought to be an accident; but Inspector Palmu notices that the murderer has made a mistake. BE SILENT, MY SORROW, BE SILENT (1918) Pyotr Chardynin, a circus performer, is crippled at work. With no form of workers' compensation or welfare available, he tries to earn his keep playing violin on the street. His young wife, Vera, tires of unending poverty and becomes the mistress of a wealthy man. The wealthy man's brother, always in debt because of gambling losses, not only sponges off his richer brother to cover his debts, but seduces Vera.

Singing star Joseph Schmidt plays the unknown tenor Ricardo, who shares a small apartment in Venice with the musical clown Rigo. After unsuccessfully trying to land a part on the stage, Ricardo tries his luck with radio. At first, he is turned away; but instead of going, Ricardo begins to sing. He is immediately offered a contract and his recordings quickly make him famous. In a record store, Ricardo gets to know the music-loving salesperson Nina, who becomes friends with him and Rigo. When Ricardo comes to the realization, that Nina does indeed love his voice, but that her heart belongs to Rigo, the two men's friendship is damaged. Soon after, Rigo has to appear without Ricardo, but before he disgraces himself, Ricardo shows up and saves the show with his singing. The two friends reconcile, for Ricardo is less concerned with his own selfish needs now, but would rather make everyone else happy with his singing. . .

One of the best miltary epic films put out in the Soviet Union, this film contains a lot of battle scenes of great interest; especially the infantry attack on Pleven. The film tells the story of Imperial Russia's intervention in the Bulgarian uprising against the Ottoman Empire in the late 19th Century and how they contributed to the "liberation" of the Balkans. And since the subject involves the Tsarist government and not its successor, the Soviets, the film subtly hints at Russia's real designs in the Balkans, which had a lot less to do with "fraternal assistance" than it did with a power grab. The western European powers are portrayed exactly as you would suspect them to be in a film released shortly after Stalin's death and very much at the height of the Cold War. But for all the subtle -- and not too subtle -- propaganda, the script pretty accurately describes the intrigues which took place on the part of the non-combatant powers, too.
Excellent German war movie about four Kriegsmarine cadets who begin their military service in 1940; first, on a minesweeper, then on a submarine. In the end, only one will survive (which pretty much corresponds to the real-life statistics for German U-Boat crews). Postwar film allows an honest and critical look at what it was REALLY like to serve in the German navy during the War, which, of course, was much different than how the regime portrayed submarine warfare to be. A moving and accurate anti-war drama.
Der Film spielt in Deutschland während des Zweiten Weltkrieges. 1940 nimmt das Minensuchboot Albatros vier „frische“ Seekadetten an Bord, die zuvor als Freunde zusammen auf einem Heringsfänger gearbeitet haben: Hans Teichmann, Gerd Heyne, Emil Stollenberg und Vögele. Schon am nächsten Tag laufen sie aus. Die Mannschaft gerät in schwere Kämpfe. Vögele stirbt. Teichmann rettet dem schwer verwundeten Flottillenchef Wegener, in dessen Frau Edith er unglücklich verliebt ist, das Leben. Der erblindete Wegener ist aber nun vollständig auf die Hilfe seiner Frau angewiesen. Desillusioniert über seine aussichtslose Liebe meldet Teichmann sich zum U-Boot-Einsatz, nachdem er im Lazarett gesundet ist. Das Kommando auf diesem U-Boot führt Wegeners Jugendfreund Jochen Lüttke. Wegener hatte sich dafür verwendet, dass Teichmann dort anheuern kann. Lüttke ahnt etwas von der Liebe Teichmanns zu Edith, weswegen der junge Offizier allerhand Schikanen erdulden muss. Auch schätzt Lüttke Teichmann wegen einer Begebenheit auf dem Minensuchboot völlig falsch ein. Teichmann hatte dort den unfähigen und überforderten Leutnant Pauli, der ihn immer wieder anschwärzte, aus gutem Grund niedergeschlagen.

Gitta Stadelmann ist die Tochter des schrulligen Tiermalers Sebastian Stadelmann. Gitta singt und tanzt während der Hausarbeit und wird durch das offene Fenster zufällig von Georg Harding, einem Operettenkomponisten, beobachtet. Dieser ist begeistert von der Vorführung und Gittas Talent und schmeichelt sich bei Gitta ein. Er verspricht, ihr gegen den Widerstand des Vaters zu einer Karriere am Theater zu verhelfen. Harding will, dass der Theaterdirektor Bommerlund Gitta für die von Harding komponierte Operette „Maske in Blau“ engagiert. Bis zum Engagement von Gitta müssen aber noch einige Hürden überwunden werden, verantwortlich dafür sind der Textdichter Stanzinger und der Etagenchef Seehauser.
Gitta Stadelmann is the daughter of the quirky animal painter Sebastian Stadelmann. Gitta sings and dances while doing her housework and just happens to be observed through the open window by Georg Harding, an operetta composer. He's thrilled with her display and her talent and tries to curry favor with Gitta. He promises to help her start a career in the theater in spite of her father's objections. The director Bommerlund wants to engage Gitta to play in the operetta "Mask in Blue", which was composed by Harding. But before Gitta's able to appear in the operetta, a few hurdles have to be cleared, the removal of which will be accomplished by librettist Stanzinger and the stage boss Seehauser.

On the orders of Emperor Valentian, General Ezio concludes a peace treaty with the king of the Huns, Bleda. But Bleda's powerhungry brother Atilla no isn't interested in being hostage to Rome's mercy. He has his brother and his followers murdered in cold blood. Now there's no one to stop him from engaging hated Rome in a battle to the death. He receives help from an unexpected quarter: Honoria, the Emperor's sister. She offers herself to him as his bride, if he'll help her topple her despised brother from the throne. But Attila decides to entrust his fate to the sword alone and leads his Huns to the decisive battle.
War drama, in which the preparation for and the execution of a death sentence on the SS and Police Leader in the Warsaw District, Franz Kutschera, on 01 February 1944 is depicted. Franz Kutschera had been sentenced to death by the leadership of the Armia Krajowa for his ordering of the mass executions of Poles in occupied Warsaw. This decision was made in consultation with the government of the Republic of Poland then in exile in London. Young "soldiers" under the command of "Zawada" prepare for the mission by carjacking German vehicles, acquiring machine pistols and grenades, and laying out the plans for the ambush outside of police headquarters. After the successful action, the roads of retreat close down quickly; and massive retaliation on the part of the occupiers doesn't make an escape easier. Several of the assassins are injured and are brought to local hospitals for operations. But the Gestapo quickly decides to search medical facilities for the wounded men. Meanwhile, two other assassins are cornered on a bridge and have to jump into the Vistula to escape capture. Many of the young heroes are killed; but the mission is accomplished.
Heiner und Florian sind schon seit Jahren befreundet, obwohl sie in vielerlei Hinsicht kaum unterschiedlicher sein können. In der Liebe zum Beispiel erweist sich Heiner als treuer Ehemann, während der ewige Junggeselle Florian eher einem "Windhund" gleicht. Lange Zeit haben die Freunde sich nicht mehr gesehen, deshalb beschließen sie, ihre letzten Urlaubstage miteinander zu verbringen und eine Bootstour zu unternehmen. Da Heiners Gattin Nora nicht mit von der Partie sein kann, springt kurzerhand seine Schwester Monika ein – die wiederum von Florian für Heiners Ehefrau gehalten wird. Und das sieht Florian mal wieder als Zeichen seines Pechs in der Liebe, denn eigentlich sieht er in Monika seine Traumfrau. Um seinen Freund ein wenig zu ärgern, klärt Heiner das Missverständnis nicht auf, und auch Monika findet Gefallen an der Maskerade. Etwas verzwickter wird die ganze Affäre, als die drei unterwegs das Pärchen Susanne und Tilo kennen lernen: Monika benutzt Tilo, um Florian eifersüchtig zu machen, was dazu führt, dass Susanne in Monika eine gefährliche Rivalin sieht. Als dann auch noch Nora auftaucht und eines Morgens aus Heiners Zelt gekrochen kommt, versteht Florian überhaupt nichts mehr ...
Heiner and Florian have been friends for years, although, in hindsight, they couldn't be more different. In matters of love, for example, Heiner proves to be a loyal husband; while Florian goes through women faster than a greyhound chasing after a mechanical rabbit at the track. The two friends haven't seen one another for quite a while and so therefore decide to spend their last vacation days together on a boating trip. Since Heiner's wife Nora can't take time off to be with the group, her sister Monika decides to take her place -- and who is confused by Florian to be Heiner's wife. And that's really bad luck for Florian, because he sees Monika as being THE ONE!

Am 21. Geburtstag der Söhne, dem Tag ihrer Volljährigkeit, offenbart Eckberg seinen Kindern ein großes Familiengeheimnis: Knut und Michael sind nicht seine Kinder. Ihre wahre Mutter starb bei der Geburt, und die Eckbergs entschlossen sich, die beiden aufzunehmen, damit sie in einer "richtigen" Familie aufwachsen. Aber auch Gabriele ist keine "echte" Eckberg, ihr leiblicher Vater ist ein Italiener. So unterschiedlich wie die Temperamente der drei Kinder sind ihre Reaktionen auf die Offenbarung. Es wird eine turbulente Nacht auf "Sophienlund". Während Gabriele sehr schnell mit den Tatsachen zurechtkommt, kann Knut sich einfach nicht mit dem "Betrug" seiner Eltern abfinden. Michael dagegen, der seine "Mutter" Sigrid schon immer liebte, geht nun soweit, bei seinem Vater um deren Hand anzuhalten – allerdings erst, nachdem er sich ein wenig Mut angetrunken hat. Zu guter Letzt kommt natürlich alles ins Lot, auch wenn die Geschichte noch einige Überraschungen bereithält.
The successful writer Erich Eckberg lives with his wife Sigrid and their three children -- the twins, Knut and Michael and the daughter Gabriel -- on their estate "Sophienlund". On their sons' 21st birthday, Eckberg tells them the great family secret: Knut and Michael aren't his children (happy birthday, kids ... oh! and did I mention Santa Claus doesn't exist either?). But thankfully, the news gets better: their real mother died giving birth to them (guilt trip ... guilt trip!) and the Eckbergs decided to adopt the boys and bring them up in a proper family (no doubt so they could shatter their lives with this tale on their 21st birthday). But hey: it made everyone forget about the War going on outside the theatre, right?

Julia nickt zustimmend und versetzt ihrem Gatten damit einen herben Schlag. Als Julia sich später für ihr Rendezvous zurechtmacht, hält Manders sie nicht zurück – er greift seine Pistole, doch ehe er ihr folgt, schreibt er ihr einen Abschiedsbrief, in dem er sein Verhalten begründet. Denn bevor er Julia kennen lernte, saß er für lange Zeit im Gefängnis, weil er aus Eifersucht seine Frau erschossen hatte. Diesen dunklen Abschnitt hatte er stets geheim gehalten, aber durch eine Verkettung unglücklicher Zufälle erfuhr der halbseidene Merk davon und erpresst seitdem Manders mit seinem Wissen. Nun scheint die Geschichte sich für Manders zu wiederholen – jedoch hat er nicht mit der Umsichtigkeit und Liebe seiner Frau gerechnet. Julia ahnt nämlich schon lange, dass Merk etwas Böses im Schilde führt.
A man, who served his time in prison for committing a murder of passion, is protected from blackmail by the love and courage of a woman. Originally produced in 1944, censors demanded that changes be made in the movie to pass their restrictions. The changes were made; the censors approved the film; then changed their minds ten days later. The film languished on the shelf throughout the last days of the War, when it finally found its premier in 1945 in East Berlin!
Alexander Schonath ist ein überaus begabter Musiker, der in einem Philharmonischen Orchester die erste Geige spielt. Doch als das Orchester in finanzielle Schwierigkeiten gerät, ist Peter auch der Erste, der die Truppe verlässt – die anderen Musiker, allen voran Peters Vater, sehen in ihm einen "Deserteur". In Alexanders Abwesenheit macht sein jüngerer, stets kränkelnder Bruder Hans Karriere bei den Philharmonikern und verlobt sich mit Maria, der Tochter des Orchestervorstandes Herbert Hartwig. Da kehrt Peter plötzlich zurück und beginnt eine leidenschaftliche Affäre mit Maria. Hans ist am Boden zerstört, zumal Peter, der sich mit Marias Hilfe mit seinem Vater versöhnt hat, ihm seinen Platz im Orchester streitig zu machen droht. Zwischen den Brüdern entwickelt sich ein heftiger Konflikt, bis Hans während eines Konzerts ohnmächtig zusammenbricht. Als Peter von einem Arzt erfährt, dass man jede Aufregung von Hans fernhalten muss, um sein Leben nicht zu gefährden, beschließt Peter abermals wegzugehen. So macht er sich auf den Weg, nennt niemandem seine Beweggründe und zieht sich dadurch erneut die Missgunst seiner verständnislosen Kollegen zu ...
Germany before 1933: The financial situation of the Berliner Philharmonic has grown worse, and although most of the musicians in the orchestra have remained loyal, the first violinist, Alexander Schonath, has turned his back on the Philharmonic. He has taken himself and his violin to a group, which plays entertainment music and is considered a traitor by everyone in the Philharmonic. Alexander's father, the most senior member of the orchestra, is the least forgiving of his son. In reality, however, Alexander had good motives for leaving. And he just might be saving someone's life in doing so.
In einer verfallenen Mühle in der Nähe einer Felsschlucht lebt der alte Jonas Lauretz mit seiner Familie, die seit Jahren unter der Brutalität des Trinkers zu leiden hat. Die Menschen atmen zwar auf, aber der Verdacht, dass Lauretz kein natürliches Ende genommen haben könnte, zwingt den alten Amtmann, die Angehörigen zu vernehmen. Während der Verhandlung stirbt er jedoch, der Fall bleibt ungeklärt. Der neue Amtmann, Andreas von Richenau, verliebt sich in Silvelie, sie heiraten, und für sie und ihre Familie beginnt eine Zeit des Glücks. Doch da entdeckt von Richenau die Akte Lauretz und ohne Rücksicht auf seine persönliche Situation beginnt er aufs Neue mit der Klärung des Falles. Anschuldigungen und Verzweiflung bringen plötzlich jeden in Verdacht – bis Gastwirt Bündner von Richenau zur Brücke führt und gesteht, Lauretz hinuntergestoßen zu haben. Danach stürzt er sich selbst in die Tiefe.
Old man Jonas Lauretz and his family run a remote sawmill in the Via Mala in Switzerland. Lauretz is a violent tyrant who rides and browbeats his wife, son Niklas and daughters Sylvia and Hanna at every chance he can. After getting drunk one night, Lauretz gets into a fistfight and lands in prison. Now, his family is hoping the experience will make him a different man. Though the film was completed in March 1944, this expressionist thriller by Baky was banned by the censors and partially destroyed during a bombing raid towards the end of the War. The missing sequences were re-shot in the Eastern Sektor in 1948 and that's where it got its premiere.

Sie lernt den 29 jährigen Chemiker Manfred kennen und lieben. Kurz darauf zieht sie mit dem melancholischen Einzelgänger in eine kleine Dachgeschosswohnung. Doch wie immer im Leben kommt die Politik dazwischen, denn das Liebespaar stellt auch eine Metapher für die beiden deutschen Staaten dar. Im Waggonwerk sind die Probleme nicht zu übersehen. Es gibt eine korrupte Leitung, unmotivierte Arbeiter und Material-Mangel. Die Zustände ändern sich erst, als der Werkleiter von einem Besuch in “Berlin-W” nicht zurückkehrt. Nachdem dessen Nachfolger Wendland seine Arbeit aufnimmt und es auch dem idealistischen Brigadeleiter Meternagel gelingt, die abtrünnigen Arbeiter neu zu begeistern, schöpft Rita neuen Optimismus.
The Divided Sky tells the story of Rita Seidel. Prior to the construction of the Berlin Wall, she moves to Halle to study and ends up working in a car factory. There, she gets to know the 29 year-old chemist Manfred and falls in love with him. Shortly thereafter, she and her melancholy loner of a boyfriend move into a small, attic apartment. But, as it always happens in life, politics comes between the two, for the couple is a metephor for the two, now split, German states. There are problems at the car factory which can't be overlooked. Management is corrupt; the workers unmotivated; and there's a shortage of materiel to do the job. Conditions change when the plant manager goes on a trip to "Berlin-W" and doesn't return. Only after his successor Wendland takes over and the idealistic brigade leader Meternagel manages to inspire the once rebellious plant workers, does Rita find new optimism.

This silent German film is a generally agreeable effort to transform heavyweight boxing champ Max Schmeling into a movie star. It's the old saw about an up-and-coming pugilist who ignores his loyal girlfriend in favor of a wealthy adventuress. His new romance nearly wrecks the hero's career, but with the help of his friends -- and of course, his real sweetheart -- he makes a spectacular comeback. The final scenes show Schmeling and his new bride heading for America, which was evidently Mecca so far as pre-Hitler German filmmakers were concerned. Max Schmeling's leading lady in Love in the Ring is Olga Tschechowa; in real life, he married the equally popular actress Anny Ondra.

Außer sich vor Wut erschießt Severin zwei Soldaten und flieht daraufhin vor seinen Verfolgern in die Berge. Von hier aus beginnt er als Partisanenkämpfer den Widerstand gegen die napoleonischen Invasoren zu organisieren, ein Kampf, den Severin am Ende mit seinem Leben bezahlt.
Adventure film with Luis Trenker as a freedom fighter, who battles the Bavarian-French occupation of South Tyrol at the beginning of the 19th Century. When the student Severin Anderlan returns to his home in South Tyrol, he learns that invading French soldiers have murdered his mother and sister and set the family farm on fire. Outraged, Severin shoots two soldiers and flees from his pursuers into the mountains. It is here, that he begins a guerilla war against the Napoleonic invaders; a battle, which, in the end, Severin will pay for with his life.
This is the story of a simple tenant dispute which very quickly involves the entire apartment house fighting against one another.
Mit dem Südexpress fährt die feine Gesellschaft im Winter ans Mittelmeer, darunter die junge Witwe Lisa von Hellwitz, in die sich der Speisewagenkellner Hans verliebt. Doch Lisa lässt sich bereits vom exotischen Prinzen Tarnoff umgarnen. Als ihr Schmuck gestohlen wird, durchsucht die Polizei den ganzen Zug, kann aber nichts finden. Hans wird als Verdächtiger entlassen. Er findet eine Stelle in dem Hotel, in dem auch Lisa und der Prinz absteigen. Schnebeli, der Privatdetektiv des Prinzen, überwacht den wunderlichen Professor Degenfeld, der eine Badehütte am Strand bezieht und von dort aus seinerseits den Prinzen bespitzelt. Als Degenfeld beweisen kann, dass es der Prinz war, der Lisas Schmuck gestohlen hat, treibt die Badehütte mit ihm und Schnebeli aufs Meer ab. Hans rettet den Tag, indem er sich als Chauffeur verkleidet und den Prinzen statt zum Hafen zur Polizei fährt. Inzwischen hat auch Lisa längst erkannt, dass ihr Herz in Wirklichkeit Hans gehört.
Germany's upper crust takes the Southern Express every winter to the Mediterranean. This is the case, too, for the young widow Lisa von Hellwitz, who has fallen in love with the waiter in the dining car, Hans. Lisa, however, is being pursued by the exotic Prince Tarnoff. When Lisa's jewellery is stolen, the police search the entire train, but they can't find anything. Hans is considered a suspect, but then released. He then gets a job in the hotel, where the Prince and Lisa are holed up. Schnebeli, the Prince's private detective is keeping an eye on Professor Degenfeld, who is occupying a hut on the beach and who is spying on the Prince (you following all this?). Degenfeld is soon able to prove the Prince is the jewel thief and the Prince manages to nearly drown him and his own private detective in the ocean. Luckily, Hans saves the day by disguising himself as a chauffeur and driving the Prince to the cops instead of to the harbor to make a getaway. In the interim, Lisa has figured out that she really wants the down-and-out penniless waiter and not the rich Prince. Uh huh .... just like real life.
