Mari Pataki, the daughter of a well-to-do peasant who's just left a newly established agricultural co-op, falls in love with a young co-worker, Mate Biro. Her father, however, has other plans. "Land marries land" is the bedrock of his archaic philosophy about love; and he's chosen an affluent landholder for his daughter's future husband. During a village festival, the young lovers can enjoy their time on the carousel, but the brutal logic of the girl's father will bring all that to naught. When the day of the wedding arrives, however, Mate provokes a scandal by dancing an endless Csardas with the bride, whose whirling circles resume the visual motif of the carousel ride. Everything's pointing to a dramatic and tragic ending, but in the end, reason prevails: the lovers can go to one another and the representatives of the "old ways" must accept their defeat.
