During the Second World War, Roger Perrin, a pastry worker, receives his mobilization order. Son-in-law of the boss, he leaves both his shop and home at the same time. Jean Durrieu, meanwhile, joined the army as a volunteer. He could have taken advantage of his situation as a journalist to obtain a special assignment, but the idea that others could fight in his place is unbearable to him. In July 1940, the two men, now POWs, are brought into Germany with other French prisoners of war. They falsely declare themselves farmers and are sent as agricultural workers to a village in the Black Forest. There, they are placed at the service of the mayor, in a somewhat hostile climate. But they realize that they enjoy much more favorable conditions than the other prisoners in the area. Jean prepares his escape by gathering civilian clothes and food. He takes advantage of a journey in the forest to break down the truck. Left alone with Helga, the burgomaster's daughter, he steals her clothes to prevent her from pursuing him and flees to far-off France.

Gendre de son patron, il quitte d'un même pas sa boutique et son foyer, avec sa femme Alice et sa belle-mère acariâtre. Jean Durrieu, quant à lui, rejoint l'armée comme engagé volontaire. Il aurait pu profiter de sa situation de journaliste pour obtenir une affectation spéciale, mais l'idée que d'autres puissent se battre à sa place lui est insupportable. En juillet 1940, les deux hommes qui ont été faits prisonniers se rencontrent fortuitement et passent le Rhin avec d'autres prisonniers de guerre français. Ils se déclarent faussement agriculteurs et sont envoyés comme travailleurs agricoles dans un village de Forêt-Noire. Là, ils sont mis au service du bourgmestre, dans un climat un peu hostile. Mais ils se rendent compte qu'ils bénéficient de conditions beaucoup plus favorables que les autres prisonniers des environs. Jean prépare son évasion en rassemblant des vêtements civils et des vivres. Il profite d'un trajet en forêt pour mettre le camion en panne. Resté seul avec Helga, la fille du bourgmestre, il lui vole ses vêtements pour l'empêcher de le poursuivre et s'enfuit pour rejoindre la France.
