The end of the Second World War has come and gone, but the violence is not entirely over. In the Beskid Mountains, five members of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) show up at a homestead in the mountains. One of them is injured and the Ukrainians insist on hiding him in the residents' house until he recovers. The family is taken hostage and the Ukrainians force the head of the house, Ondrej, to find a doctor to bring back to treat the wounded man. Ondrej is told that if he rats on them instead, the family will be shot. It doesn't take Ondrej long to figure out that he is going to have to deal with the UPA men on his own.
