Die Unbekannte (The Unknown) was adapted by director Frank Wysbar from his own novel (co-written by R. C. Muschler). Sybille Schmitz, who was previously so memorable as the attractive blood-sucker in Dreyer's Vampyr, heads the cast as woman-of-mystery Madeleine. The story begins at the ending, as Madeleine's dead body is pulled from the river. With no identification on her person, Madeleine remains unidentified -- to everyone but the viewer, who is apprised of the girl's melancholy history via flashback.

DVD-R IS IN GERMAN WITH switchable ENGLISH SUBTITLES. APPROX. 84 MINS. COMBINED TOTAL. VERY GOOD FILM QUALITY OVERALL.

IMPORTANT: Due to technical problems with the film, the last 6 minutes does not have sound. However, we were able to line up subtitles from a known script with the silent portion of the movie. Unfortunately, we have not been able to find a copy with the complete soundtrack.

PLEASE NOTE THAT SWITCHABLE (SOFT) SUBTITLES WILL NOT SHOW UP WHEN VIEWING THE SAMPLE BELOW. IF YOU SEE SUBTITLES, THEN THEY ARE HARD-ENCODED (meaning, they cannot be turned off when viewing the film):
