Karl Geschwandtner, a porter in a large hotel, has only one wish:  one day, he'd like to be the lord and master, as the saying goes:  to be the porter and 'ruler' in the hotel.  And luck helps him to temporarily fulfill his dream.  But Karl doesn't just take over running the hotel, he feels the need to stick his nose in the life of his hotel guests, too.  There are couples, who don't want to be put together or apart.  When a valuable jewel goes missing, he plays detective and only succeeds in helping the thief to rob the hotel guests at his leisure.  Pretty soon, chaos reigns at the hotel; there's massive confusion.  Even the newspaper seller, Wally, whom Karl secretly loves, is slowly starting to mistrust him.  When the director of "Hotel Europa" finally returns, he throws Karl out, who thereupon simply rents a room as a guest.  Now he's successful in unmasking the hotel thief, who once again tries to make a foray.  The other victims revert back to their proper "roles"; peace returns to the hotel.  Karl hangs up the cloak of masterdom on its nail forever and gladly returns back to being a porter, happy to once more have Wally at his side.

Karl Geschwandtner, Lohndiener in einem großen Hotel, hat nur einen Wunsch: einmal möchte er der liebe Herrgott sein, sprich: Portier und somit "Herrscher"im Hotel. Der Zufall hilft ihm dabei, seinen Traum vorübergehend zu erfüllen. Doch der Karl übernimmt nicht nur die "Führung" des Hotels, auch in das Leben der Hotelgäste mischt er sich gründlich ein. Da werden Paare, die es gar nicht wollen, auseinander und zusammen gebracht. Als kostbare Schmuckstücke verschwinden, spielt er Detektiv und verhilft damit dem Hoteldieb erst dazu, die Gäste in aller Ruhe auszurauben. Bald steht das ganze Hotel Kopf, es herrscht ein wildes Durcheinander.  Sogar die Zeitungsverkäuferin Wally, die Karl heimlich liebt, wird langsam misstrauisch. Als endlich der Direktor den Schauplatz "Hotel Europa" wieder betritt, wirft er Karl kurzerhand hinaus, worauf sich dieser einfach als Gast wieder einmietet.  Nun gelingt es ihm, den Hoteldieb, der noch einmal einen Beutezug machen will, zu enttarnen. Auch die übrigen Opfer finden zu ihren richtigen "Rollen" zurück, es kehrt wieder Ruhe ein. Karl hängt den Portiersposten für immer an den Nagel und wird als Lohndiener glücklich mit seiner Wally.
