In July 1941, Colonel Sermonti is tasked to lead an Italian regiment sent to the USSR to fight alongside the Germans on the Eastern Front. Initially enthusiastic, his soldiers quickly realize the brutality of the Germans' war-without-mercy against the Soviets. With time, the seemingly endless landscapes, challenging weather, scorched-earth tactics, hostile locals, and costly battles all take their toll. The stalled winter offensive outside of Moscow will remove any illusions of glory any of them once had. Finally, with the Soviet counteroffensive on the Don River, made in conjunction with the surrounding of the Germans and their allies at Stalingrad, the futility of Mussolini's adventure in Operation Barbarossa is revealed for all to see.
