PETER THE GREAT  (1937)  * with switchable English subtitles *

Made at the height of the terrible Stalinist purges and only a few years after more than 7,000,000 people had been starved to death in the Ukraine through a man-made famine, this film has none of the obvious and heavy-handed Stalinist propaganda of the films of the 1930s. There is, however, not-too-subtle "hints" about Russia's constantly having to be on guard against foreign interventionists, internal treason, and the threat of their neighbors (in this film, that extends to almost every country in Europe). It is these threats that cause Peter the Great to be wild, terribly cruel, loud and unbearably ferocious to both his enemies and his own people. The two parts of this film (with each part on its own disc) show the struggle of a Russia trying to Europeanize itself while at the same time having to defend its survival from their arch foe, the Swedes. Annihilated at his first attempt to gain a foothold on the Narva and to build a new city eventually to be called "Petersburg", Peter rebuilds his army; melts down the churches' bells for cannons and makes the clergy and the nobility his implacable enemies. Even his son Aleksei is against all his works and is manipulated by the European powers to weaken Russia from within and return it to its humble and non-threatening state. In the end, Peter's attempts to bring Russia into the 18th Century as a major power will come about ... but at what price to Russia and to the Tsar himself?

THE AFTERMAN  (1985)

It's 2011 and the world has been torn apart by war, violence and other nasty things. An atomic annihilation of most of mankind has resulted in a world in ruins, where chaos and anarchy reign. The protagonist of the film survived the conflict by being shoved into a fallout shelter as a child. Twenty years later, he leaves the shelter, incapable of reading, writing or speaking and still with the mind of a child. This, of course, not only leaves him completely vulnerable to the powers-that-be, but saves the directors of this rather bizarre cult film lots of money having to hire a scriptwriter. Though this man-child can't count to five, he has managed to land himself a wife. They both find themselves the prisoners of a local sex merchant. They're able to escape and over time, something beautiful develops between the two. Whether love and happiness (by this film's definition: sex) can survive in this barbaric world is another question; but apparently, it can, since there's lot of graphic nudity, homosexual rape and forced oral sex for your viewing "pleasure".

Five young Soviet Army recruits struggle for survival against the merciless violence that surrounds them on a daily basis. Their only means of saving their dignity is by preserving the humanity and compassion they share for each other. Visually astonishing and emotionally jarring, this film is Hussein Erkenov's courageous and stinging indictment of Communism. Banned by the Soviet censors upon its initial release, the film had to be smuggled out of the country to make its worldwide premier at the 1995 Berlin Film Festival. Some reviewers have remarked about an alleged homoerotic undertone to the film. While the scenes in the bathhouse are very representative of the activity in both civilian and military bathing institutions, the homoerotic interpretations are not. Soldiers suspected of having homosexual tendencies quite often did not make it alive out of basic training.

Martin Hinterkirchner, a not-so-happy employee of the Vienna Opera, secretly sends a piece he composed to a music manager. For him, the ideal singer of the piece would be the famous Linda Borg, but her manager thinks the song is a piece of trash. Martin assumes it's Linda who's turned down his work and has nothing but bad words for her now. Grandfather Leopold, however, who met the singer at a dog show, thinks otherwise. When Martin fills in for his untalented friend Peter at a song competition, singing his own piece, he mistakenly thinks the audience's whistling means they don't like the song either. Disappointed, he flees back to his hometown in Tirol. Peter, however, is mistaken for the singer and is offered a contract.

Morality drama with Nazi undertones: Professor Dr. Niemeyer is the director of Royal Grammar School and is known to his students as the loveable, but unworldly "Traumulus". His favorite student, the young Baron Kurt von Zedlitz, has been attending secret meetings at a nightclub with the intention of causing a scandal for the local administration -- an intimate enemy of Niemeyer. Niemeyer is indulgent; but Kurt is suffering from a bad conscience. He has left the student home without permission, in order to arrange a secret meeting with his fellow students, so as to cleanse their souls, so to speak. The police, however, are alerted of this meeting and Niemeyer, convinced that Kurt turned them in, sends the desperate students away. When Niemeyer discovers Kurt's real intentions, it's already too late.

LEINEN AUS IRLAND  (1939)  * with switchable English subtitles *

A film about commercial interests with an anti-Semitic theme throughout. The Prague textile firm Libussa A.G. is building up its base of hegemony, in that it is secretly buying up all the local linen producing firms, which compete with it. Dr. Kuhn, the Jewish general secretary of the firm, mainly concerned with the expansion of his own power, brings Lilly, the daughter of the firm's president, together with Franz, a secretary in the Department of Commerce, who, in exchange, has promised to allow the firm to import linen duty free from Ireland. Naturally, this will lead to the collapse of the local linen makers ... the firm's competition.

A CANTERBURY TALE  (1944)

A Canterbury Tale is a profoundly personal journey to bucolic Kent, England. Set amid the tumult of the Second World War, yet with a rhythm as delicate as a lullaby, the film follows three modern-day incarnations of Chaucer’s pilgrims — a melancholy “landgirl,” a plainspoken American GI, and a resourceful British sergeant — who are waylaid in the English countryside en route to the mythical town and forced to solve a bizarre village crime. Building to a majestic climax that ranks as one of the filmmaking duo’s finest achievements, the dazzling A Canterbury Tale has acquired a following of devotees passionate enough to qualify as pilgrims themselves.

HIMMEL OHNE STERNE  (1956)  * with switchable English and Spanish subtitles *

The beginning of the 1950s:  The border which separates East from West Germany still has a temporary appearance about it, even though it is heavily guarded on both sides of the divide.  Anna Kaminski crosses this border and arrives with light wounds in the West, where she meets the border guard Carl Altmann, who offers her his assistance.  She declines this help and instead hurries into the nearby town, looking for Otto and Elsbeth Friese.  They, in turn, aren't too thrilled to see the girl, because Anna's the mother of their grandchild, Jochen, who's been living as an adoptee with his grandparents.  Their son was killed in the War and Anna hasn't remarried.  When the two Germanys went their own ways, it was decided to leave the child in the West, where it was thought he'd have a better life.  Anna's come a number of times to visit the child; but this time, she intends to take him back East with her.  The grandparents are dead set against this; but Anna nevertheless seizes the child and, with Carl Altmann's help, manages to smuggle herself and her son over the border.  Willi, a friend of Altmann, helps smuggle them over in the back of his truck; but when they arrive in the DDR, the child is gone!

In this morals farce, "The bathroom on the Threshing Floor", which takes place during the 18th Century in a Flemish village and merchant milieu, Paul Henckels plays the trader Ule http://www.rarefilmsandmore.com/Media/Thumbs/0003/0003829-das-bad-auf-der-tenne-1943.jpgSleeks and carries on with the mayor's wife (Heli Finkenzeller). Goebbels labelled this first color film from Tobis Studios an "ordinary peasant film". And while the costume drama was a colorful success, the director Volker von Collande "completely screwed up", according to the Propaganda Minister in his diaries. Von Collande's work, which premiered in Berlin on 30 July 1943, nevertheless received the designation of being "culturally valuable" ... and was promptly restricted to adult audiences. The Catholic Church had a fit about two of the bath scenes, where two girls could be seen naked from behind (but, ironically, had little to say about the "bath scenes" taking place at the same time in extermination camps to the East).

PISTORIUS  (1939)

Dr. Pistorius, a "superior mensch", is incredibly vain and has a bad case of small-town conceit (big fish in little aquarium).  Currently, he's doing research on his ancestors and he is quite sure, that he's descended from nobility.  Imagine his great embarrassment to discover that his predecessors were mere peasants!  But eventually, he comes to the surprising conclusion, that the worth of a person is based on his personality and not his feudal family tree  (a conclusion he no doubt would never had discovered had any of his ancestors had a "von" before their name).

EGRI CSILLAGOK (1968) * with switchable English and Spanish subtitles *

The film is based on Geza Gardonyi's historical novel, which was compulsory reading in all Hungarian schools.  It is the 1500s in Hungary and troops of the Ottoman Empire are raiding the country, robbing, looting and dragging Hungarians into captivity and slavery.  Two of the captives, children, are brought to the slave market to be sold, but escape and carry with them a supernatural talisman, which changes the fortunes of the invading Hungarians.  Like many similar films of the period from the 1960s to the 1980s, this anti-Turkish, anti-Ottoman film had lavished amounts of money dedicated to it, which resulted in a lavish costumer spectacle.

Excellent worker Ferenc Kocsis has been appointed manager in a state-run store. In that same store work Ilonka, a talented fashion designer; Boriska; Daniel; Klimke, a rather conservative salesman; and Glauziusz, a conscientious and honest bookkeeper. Everyone seems to love arguing more than they do working; but love will soon take the place of selfishness. Meanwhile, the store's former manager spreads the rumor that American broadcasters on Radio Free Europe are reporting that the government is going to declare the 100 Forint note worthless and whoever doesn't spend them, will not be compensated when they're replaced. He is thus trying to create a run on the store to show his former superiors that the new manager they installed in his place is incapable of keeping up with market demand (thus calling into question the validity of a planned socialist economy ... a very dangerous, and thus, counterrevolutionary thing for any manager to display in Stalinist Hungary). Friends and relatives soon besiege the story, buying up everything they can to get rid of their 100 Forint notes and causing a mass hysteria. Fortunately, in the end, the store is able to hold out until new supplies and goods arrive.

Now, which is more amazing?: the film suggesting that Radio Free America is a more trustworthy source of honest news than their own Soviet-controlled media; that the Hungarian government would replace a banknote without notice and refuse to compensate its holders for their now worthless money; or that the people wouldn't trust a socialist economy to meet their needs and that it would be impossible for a store to meet consumer demand in a planned economy? Three pretty bold assertions which somehow seemed to get past the censors and didn't result in death sentences for all involved.

It's 1962. There's a theft from some goods wagons at the railway station and the railroad dispatcher Brock recognizes one of the thieves, but refuses to identify him in a police line-up. The thief Runge convinces his partner --- the locksmith Frank --- to get to know Brock's daughter Vera, because he's convinced he knows the dispatcher ... and behind that forgotten acquaintanceship must be the reason Brock won't identify the thieves. And it doesn't take long for the answer to be found: During the Second World War, Brock's wife hid a Jewish escapee, who Runge shot after finding him in her cellar. Runge then turned Brock's wife over to the Gestapo. Out of shame, Brock took on a new identity and started a new life. But when Runge murders Frank, Brock finally breaks his silence.

Circus opens with a harrowing chase scene in an American town, where popular circus performer Marion Dixon is literally being run out of town by a bloodthirsty lynch mob. Why? Well, to find that out, you'll have to watch the film. In any event, she barely escapes with her life, jumping onto a moving train and collapsing into the arms of a visiting German on his way back to Europe. Forced to flee an intolerant United States, the woman ultimately finds political asylum in Moscow, where she's able to resume working as The Human Bullet in a circus. But Marion has not come to Moscow alone. With her is the German she met on the train, who now manages her vaudeville act. As is to be expected from a Soviet movie of 1936, he looks a bit like Hitler and his mind is filled with notions of white supremacy. He's also possessively in love with Marion and when she rejects him in favor of Ivan, the jilted German decides to ruin her career by revealing the secret reason for her flight from the USA to the circus audience.

For anyone who needs to ask himself where he/she falls on social and political issues, this film will make it very easy to provide the answer to the truly introspective. It is impossible to be "neutral" after watching this film: liberal reviewers see everything positive in its portrayal of American intolerance and German bigotry and embrace the myth of the perfect Soviet society, where everyone had free education, free healthcare, a job for life and where everyone was equal (except for the very few politicians and mafioso in their everpresent track suits, who were just a tad more equal than everyone else). That millions died to overthrow such a "perfect" system is either completely lost on fans of that kind of society or excused away with phrases of how the USSR had the right idea, but went astray. Gulags and day-long lines to buy stale bread and ersatz sausage --- when available --- are simply products of rabid, Republican, anti-Communist propaganda (who so hate the poor they oppress). To those whose social ideals fall to the right, the constant, inevitable snorts of derision from conservative viewers at idealistic depictions of tolerance, love for all and the home of democratic, socialist ideals will drown out the soundtrack. Nevertheless, propaganda aside, Circus is entertaining in a rather simplistic, way with an uncompromising one-sided view of "Us vs. Them". One of the film's best known songs became extremely popular --- you can hear it in the film sample --- and was even played in orphanages and the gulags, where the lyrics, "my country, where one can breathe the most free" no doubt brought about feelings of irony to at least a few of the camps' forced laborers.

German film classic from the year 1952 with Hans Albers and Hildegard Knef in one of the first German "Road Movies". Truck driver Heinrich Schluter is on the highway to Frankfurt one night, when he comes upon a car accident and stops. Looking in on the now dead driver, Heinrich takes a load of money from the bashed-up car. When the police show up, he discovers the dead man was a wanted currency smuggler and thus considers it only right he hold onto the money he stole from the dead man. Consumed with thoughts about his daughter, who just got married, he picks up the hitchhiker Inge Hoffmann, who reminds him of the child now departed from the family home with her new husband. The hitchhiker tells Heinrich about her brother and the two start getting to know one another better. In reality, however, the fawning twenty-four year old wants to use the truck driver to smuggle drugs. Moral of the story? There's no fool, like an old fool.
