Grieg wants to write lyrical music representing his country. He gradually promotes his works with the help of composer and friend Rikard Nordraak. During these early years (the 1860's), Norway wasn't especially looking for a composer of nationalistic music. In the film, Grieg complains about the lack of local interest in Norwegian folk music. An old flame helps subsidize a series of concerts for Grieg. He then applies for a travel grant, and his wife Nina befriends a local pianist, who then writes a letter to Franz Liszt on Grieg's behalf. Grieg receives the grant, and leaves for Rome, while Nina remains in Norway. DVD-R is in English with switchable English subtitles. Approx. 141 mins. See film samples for sound and video quality!
