NOTE:  There are scenes of animal cruelty in this film.

This cinematic version of Bizet's opera opens with the closing moments in a bullfight, where a bull, driven to exhaustion through blood loss, is "mercifully" put out of its misery with a thrust of the sword and the "heroic" animal abuser is hailed by the bloodthirsty crowd. If you can get past this unnecessarily brutal opening, the rest of the film is set in 1820s Spain, where the soldier Don José falls in love with the fiery and charismatic factory worker Carmen. Conflicts and grievances multiply, however, as it becomes apparent their views on love and commitment are fundamentally incompatible.

DVD-R is in French with switchable English and Spanish subtitles. Approx. 149 mins. See film sample for audio and video quality!
