“Mutterlied” is a singer-film, in which the melodramatic life of an opera star on the stage mixes with the life of everyday people.  The singer Ettore Vanni married the young opera singer Fiamma without knowing that she’s been carrying on with a colleague named Doret, who is also the real father of her son.  When Doret, who isn’t able to give up on Fiamma even after she gets married, is found shot dead in her dressing room, naturally suspicion falls on Fiamma, who ends up getting arrested and thrown in jail. 

"Mutterlied" ist ein Sängerfilm, in welchem sich das melodramatische Opernleben auf der Bühne und das bürgerliche Leben vermischen. Der Sänger Ettore Vanni hat die junge Opernsängerin Fiamma geheiratet, ohne zu wissen, dass sie nebenbei eine Liaison mit dem Kollegen Doret unterhielt, der auch der eigentliche Vater seines Sohnes ist. Als Doret, der es auch nach der Hochzeit nicht lassen kann, Fiamma nachzustellen, in ihrer Garderobe erschossen aufgefunden wird, fällt der Verdacht auf Fiamma, woraufhin sie ins Gefängnis kommt.
