João Barbela is poor man who lives from charity --- what coins the people of Lisbon's popular districts give him as 'pay' for his puppeteering work. To the kids, he's like a king. When he meets Maria, an equally poor girl, he wants to change her life; get a house; maybe marry; and be happy together. But unlike his five-minute puppet performances, life's endings are not always happy.
