Sea-bum Freddy "entertains" guests with his guitar at the inn, "At Uncle Max' Place". Unfortunately, he's not as talented as movie producers would like you to believe he is, since his screeching only brings in enough for a few miserable beers. Perky Susi, a waitress at Uncle Max', is in love with the honest --- but broke --- bloke with the annoyingly strong singing voice. Even the journalist Katya, who hears the singing sailor while on a stroll down St. Pauli's with her fiancee, gets the hots for him (Uhh, hello? Fiancee at 9 o'clock!). What the two clueless dames don't know is that Freddy's wanted by the cops and he's got a hankering to wander that no skirt's gonna tame.

Seemann Freddy unterhält "Bei Onkel Max" die Gäste mit Liedern zur Gitarre. Das bringt ihm nicht nur ein paar Trinkgelder ein. Die Kellnerin Susi verliebt sich in den ehrlichen Kerl mit der kräftigen Stimme. Auch die Journalistin Katja, die gerade mit ihrem Verlobten einen Bummel durch St. Pauli macht, wird auf den singenden Seemann aufmerksam. Sie wissen nicht, daß Freddy von der Polizei gesucht wird und ihn die Sehnsucht nach der Ferne nicht losläßt.
