An author, a businessman, a shipowner and a publisher form a business venture, which will supposedly exploit a huge find of lobsters on the island of Santa Cruz.  After a report in the newspaper, the business’ stocks do well.  But the partners quarrel with one another and it doesn’t help that there aren’t any lobsters on Santa Cruz after all.  Nevertheless, a team heads off to the island in a decrepit boat to open up a cannery in vain.  Finally, the boat is ordered to come home and a part of the crew is left behind on Santa Cruz, so that no one finds out the whole thing was nothing more than a scam.  The crew left on the island fight one another and among the last four survivors is the captain and his lover.

Ein Schriftsteller, ein Geschäftsmann, ein Reeder und eine Verlegerin gründen ein Unternehmen, das ein angebliches Langustenvorkommen bei der Insel Santa Cruz ausbeuten soll. Durch in der Zeitung lancierte Meldungen verkaufen sich die Aktien des neuen Unternehmens gut. Aber die Unternehmer verstreiten sich, und bei der öden Insel gibt es keine Langusten. Dennoch macht sich eine Mannschaft mit einem altersschwachen Kahn auf den Weg nach Santa Cruz, um dort vergeblich eine Konservenfabrik aufzubauen. Schließlich wird das Schiff zurückbeordert und ein Teil der Mannschaft auf Santa Cruz zurückgelassen, damit niemand erfährt, dass das ganze Unternehmen ein Betrug war. Die auf der Insel zurückgelassenen Männer bekämpfen sich. Zu den letzten vier Überlebenden gehören der Kapitän und seine Geliebte.
