The princess-mother wishes to marry off the young prince Leopold to a princess; but Leopold is in love with Anneliese, the pharmacist's daughter. So mom spreads the rumor, that Anneliese is having an affair with the school district candidtate Schmitt. Spitefully, Leopold goes off to war to die (yeah, that'll teach 'em!). Back home in Dessau, his mother urges Annelise to marry Schmitt. In the last moment, however, Sergeant Greschke abducts the bride and brings her in the wedding carriage to Kaiserwerth, where Leopold marries her on the spot. Gracious Emperor Leopold appoints Anneliese to a countess in the meantime and now it's okay for them to be married, because she's appropriately snobbish now.

Die Fürstin-Mutter möchte den jungen Fürsten Leopold mit einer Prinzessin verheiraten, Leopold verliebt sich aber in Anneliese, die Tochter des Apothekers. Daraufhin verbreitet die Mutter das Gerücht, Anneliese habe bereits eine Affäre mit dem Schulamtskandidaten Schmitt. Trotzig zieht Leopold in den Krieg. Daheim in Dessau drängt seine Mutter Anneliese, tatsächlich Schmitt zu heiraten. Aber im letzten Moment entführt Sergeant Greschke die Braut im Hochzeitswagen nach Kaiserwerth, wo Leopold sie auf der Stelle heiratet. Der gnädige Kaiser Leopold hat Anneliese inzwischen zur Reichsgräfin ernannt, und somit ist die Hochzeit nun auch standesgemäß.

Much against his mother's wishes -and convention - a young, energetic sovereign wants to marry the daughter of a chemist.
A very distinct message of out with the old and in with the new runs through the very entertaining film.
There are some picture quality and sound issues, but nothing too dramatic for a movie this old.
