Irmgard lebt mit dem Schriftsteller Georg Vanderheit zusammen, und als sie ein Kind von ihm erwartet, freut sie sich auf eine Heirat. Der überzeugte Ehegegner zeigt jedoch kein Verständnis, und aus Verzweiflung heiratet sie seinen Zwillingsbruder John. Doch nun wird der andere eifersüchtig, fühlt sich betrogen und geht als Einsiedler in die Berge. 

Irmgard lives with the author Georg Vanderheit and looks forward to marrying him after finding out she’s pregnant.  But the convinced enemy of marriage shows no understanding and out of desperation, she marries his twin brother to give a name to George’s and her child.  But George gets jealous, feels betrayed and runs off into the mountains to withdraw from a society he wants no part of.
