Boris Pettkoff is bankrupt. Who can save him from this fate? He's pinning his hopes on Rene Duval, whom his wife reveres more than anything else. At a large masked ball, she's supposed to put him into a good mood. But Maria has no intention of letting herself be used. When she sees the intended victim at the party, she falls in love with him and decides then and there to leave her husband.
