È l'estate del 1944, il paese di San Martino è nel mezzo della guerra di Resistenza. I nazisti all'approssimarsi delle truppe Alleate ordinano a tutta la popolazione di riunirsi nel duomo. Un gruppo di uomini, donne e bambini, guidato dal fattore Galvano, temendo una possibile trappola, decide di fuggire e abbandona il paese col favore della notte, per andare incontro agli americani che arrivano da sud. Poco dopo nella chiesa ha effettivamente luogo la temuta strage perpetrata dai nazisti. 

It's the Summer of 1944 and the village of San Martino is caught in the middle of a war between the Fascists and the Resistance.  With the approach of the Allied armies, the German order everyone to gather in the cathedral.  Fearing a deadly trap, a group of men, women and children, led by the steward Galvano, decide to run away in the dead of night to rendezvous with the approaching Americans driving for the town from the south.  A short time later, the Germans massacre those people who obeyed their command and gathered in the cathedral.
