Carmela arrives from a village to work in the house of the hypocritical and ambiguous notary Don Domenico and is seduced by him. The girl runs away from the house and falls into the clutches of a hag who, flattering her with promises, wants to sell her beauty. A young man, Salvatore the Black, who works in the sulphur mines, takes her from the shameful house and forces the notary to repair the wrong done by marrying her. The girl spends the various events as if in a state of daze. On the wedding day, she faints before entering a church and becomes seriously ill. 

La servetta Carmela giunge dal paesello al servizio nella casa del notaio don Domenico, ipocrita ed ambiguo e viene da questi sedotta. La ragazza fugge dalla casa e cade nelle spire di una megera che lusingandola con promesse vuol far mercato della sua bellezza. Un giovane, Salvatore detto il Nero, che lavora nella zolfatare la toglie dalla turpe casa e impone al notaio di riparare il mal fatto sposandola. La ragazza trascorre le varie vicende come in uno stato di rintontimento. Il giorno delle nozze essa sviene prima di entrare in chiesa e si ammala gravemente.
