Malcolm Smith wins a brand new automobile at a movie theater raffle. Steve Wiley, a gmabler from New York, obtains a counterfeit of the winning ticket and also claims the car is his. The theatre manager declares them both winners and leaves it to them to split the car any way they want. Steve wants to sell the car to pay off a gambling debt, but Malcolm wants to drive it to Hollywood to meet actress Anita Ekberg. Being the United States, is there a lawyer in the wings waiting to launch a lucrative lawsuit?

Um seine Schulden bezahlen zu können, lässt Steve alle Tickets einer Tombola kopieren, deren erster Preis ein Auto ist. So kommt es, dass er sich den Hauptpreis mit Malcolm teilen muss, einem großen Filmfan und Anita Eckberg-Verehrer. Malcolm hat sich in den Kopf gesetzt, in dem roten Cabriolet nach Hollywood zum Objekt seiner Verehrung zu fahren, und so sieht Steve keine andere Möglichkeit, als Malcolm auf seiner Tour durchs Land zu begleiten und zu versuchen, ihm den Wagen unterwegs abtrünnig zu machen.
