In seinem Heimatdorf ist Andreas Aichwalder ein angesehener Mann. Er ist Führer der örtlichen Bergwacht und bei seinen Helfern sehr beliebt. Als er sich in die hübsche Margret verliebt und sie bittet, ihn zu heiraten, stellt sie ihm eine Bedingung, die sein Leben zu zerstören droht: Nur wenn er seinen Beruf aufgibt, will Margret ihm ihr Ja-Wort geben, denn ihre Schwester verlor den Mann in den Bergen, und die junge Frau will nicht ebenfalls als trauernde Witwe enden. Zunächst lehnt Andreas die Forderung empört ab. Doch seine Liebe ist stärker.  

Andreas Aichwalder is a respected man in his hometown village.  He is the leader of a local mountain rescue team and is much liked among his colleagues.  When he falls in love with beautiful Margaret and asks her to marry him, she is prepared to do so; but only upon a condition, which threatens to destroy his life:  If he gives up his career, she will marry him.  You see, Margaret’s sister lost her husband in the mountains and the young woman does not want to end up as a grieving widow, too.  At first, Andreas turns down the demand with indignation.  But his love is stronger.
