Just as Doris is leaving a prison for women in the early morning of a major port city, she is approached by a waiting chauffeur and is asked whether she is "Mrs. Hallgart". Doris responds positively to the question and the women is brought to the elegant house of the shipyard owner Fredersen. Before she can ask what she has done to deserve this treatment, she is led into a stately room. There, she receives a letter addressed to "Agnes Hallgart".

Gerade als Doris am frühen Morgen das Frauengefängnis einer großen Hafenstadt verlassen hat, wird sie von einem wartenden Chauffeur angesprochen, ob sie "Frau Hallgart" sei. Doris bejaht die Frage und wird von dem Mann in das elegante Haus des Werftbesitzers Fredersen gebracht. Noch ehe sie fragen kann, was es mit dieser vornehmen Behandlung auf sich hat, wird sie dort in ein herrschaftliches Zimmer geleitet. Sie bekommt einen Brief ausgehändigt, der an eine "Agnes Hallgart" adressiert ist.
