She falls for Niki, marries him (he has no choice in the matter), and whisks him off to Flausenthurm. Franzi follows and enjoys a brief affair with Niki before Anna finds out. Franzi, much more experienced in the ways of the world, gives Anna lessons on how to win the affections of her husband.

On the day the Germans invade the Soviet Union, Alexei, a pilot, marries Sasha Lvova, a young factory worker. Later on, Alexei doesn't return from a mission and is believed dead. After the war ends, he reappears: taken prisoner, he managed to survive; but everyone except Sasha avoids him. To make matters worse, he's expelled from the Communist Party. The pilot becomes inconsolable and an alcoholic. Then, Stalin drops dead and the icy treatment meted out to former POWs begins to thaw out.

Georgian pilot Mimino dreams of flying airplanes for a major international airline. To realize his aspirations, he goes to Moscow, where he encounters a fellow comrade from the Caucasus, the Armenian, Rubik. Many misadventures ensue.

Editorial reporter Hans Trautendorffer makes a bet with his newspaper's director on New Year's Eve: He will work as a farmer-servant for a year. In return, if he completes the task, he'll win 20,000 Kronen. If he fails, he'll have to work for his newspaper for half-pay for a full year. But his search for work in rural Austria only leads from one disappointment to another. Finally, he finds work on a small farm belonging to Adamshauser; but he must determine whether life on the farm is as wonderful as he previously waxed endlessly about.

Der Wirtschaftsredakteur Hans Trautendorffer schlie t in der Silvesternacht mit seinem Zeitungsherausgeber eine Wette ab: Er wird ein Jahr lang als Bauernknecht arbeiten. Aber schon bei der Arbeitssuche gibt es die ersten Entt uschungen. Endlich findet er am kleinen Hof des armen Adamshauser eine Stellung. Er muss feststellen, dass die Welt hier keineswegs so heil ist, wie er dachte.

In the fifth film of the series, we discover once more why having a beautiful wife can be a real pain in the rear. Angelique is taken prisoner and is sold by a sinister pirate to an equally questionable Mezzo Morte, who intends to make a gift of her to the Sultan of Meknes. Kept in isolation until she learns how to be a faithful servant, one day, the Sultan catches a glimpse of her face, the beauty of which immediately beguiles him. Of course, as is the case with all the "Angelique" films, he becomes obsessed with enjoying the company of his new harem slave. This naturally causes the other harem women to be jealous and fearful for their positions in the harem ... especially the Sultan's former favorite, now doomed to a future life as a can of dog food. But fear not! Heroic Jeoffrey de Peyrac, Angelique's on-again, off-again husband, will somehow find a way to defy death and impossible odds to (once again) save Angelique's life. (Really, life as a celibate monk would be so much easier!).

RUF AN DAS GEWISSEN (1945)

Volkmar Hollberg, ein erfolgreicher Autor von Kriminalh rspielen, ist von der j ngsten Idee f r ein St ck, die ihm sein Freund Husfeld unterbreitet, alles andere als begeistert. Kriminalrat Husfeld will, dass Hollberg einen realen, zehn Jahre zur ckliegenden Mordfall an einer S ngerin aufbereitet. Damals waren die beiden M nner selbst als Zeugen geladen im Prozess gegen eine Konkurrentin der Toten, der mit einer Verurteilung endete, obwohl die Frau vehement ihre Unschuld beteuerte. Auch Husfeld war nie von der Schuld der Verurteilten berzeugt. Von dem Aufsehen, dass das H rspiel erregen w rde, erhofft er sich neue Hinweise, die eine Wiederaufnahme des Falls m glich machen k nnten. Schlie lich willigt Hollberg ein. Kaum wird diese Nachricht publik, macht sich bei Denjenigen Unruhe breit, die seinerzeit in den Fall verwickelt waren. Pl tzlich ist wieder jeder von ihnen verd chtig. Sei es der Industrielle Christiansen, der die Fertigstellung des H rspiels um jeden Preis verhindern will, oder Hollberg selbst, der in der Mordnacht bewusstlos in der Villa der Toten aufgefunden worden war. 

Volkmar Hollberg is the successful author of criminal dramas played on the radio.  His friend, criminal inspector Husfeld, is trying to convince him to write a radio play about the murder of a dancer, which took place ten years earlier.  Hollberg is not enthusiastic about the idea:  he was once a witness to the event, as he was found unconscious in the villa of the murdered woman on the night of the deed.  Husfeld is hoping that after a play about the events is broadcast over the radio, new clues to the unsolved murder mystery might turn up.  This is especially important to him, because the woman who was accused and convicted of the murder is, in his eyes, innocent of the crime.  To add to the mystery, there are a number of people who are openly nervous about such a play going on the air.  Which of the nervous nellies need not know the inspector is on his/her tail?  Turn in tomorrow, same time, same place, to find out!  (Or just buy the film!)

ICH WAR JACK MORTIMER (1935) * with switchable English subtitles *

Der Taxifahrer Ferdinand Sponer entdeckt eines Tages einen erschossenen Fahrgast in seinem Wagen. Aus Angst, f r den T ter gehalten zu werden, l sst er die Leiche verschwinden und nimmt die beiden Koffer des Toten an sich. Seine Braut Marie, der er alles erz hlt, vermutet, dass der Tote noch mehr Gep ck hatte und dieses schon im Hotel ist. Also muss Jack Mortimer, so hei t der Tote, auch im Hotel ankommen. Ferdinand geht als Mortimer dorthin. Gerade angekommen, will ihn eine Dame sprechen. Sie ist mit Mortimer verabredet und findet statt des Freundes einen Fremden vor, als sie sein Zimmer betritt. Sie ahnt, dass Mortimer etwas geschehen sein muss. Aufgeregt verl sst sie das Zimmer und l uft ihrem eifers chtigen Ehemann in die Arme. Sponer erz hlt nun beiden, dass Mortimer erschossen wurde und verl sst dann das Zimmer, um zu fliehen. Als er von einer Vorladung der Polizei erf hrt, besinnt er sich eines anderen und will ins Hotel zur ckkehren, um den wahren Sachverhalt zu berichten. Dort hat sich das Ehepaar inzwischen ausgesprochen, wobei der Mann den Mord gestand. Er benachrichtigt nun selbst die Polizei.

The jealous star conductor Monte Mayor knows that his beautiful younger wife, Winifred, is cheating on him with an American named Jack Mortimer. After the concert rehearsal, he takes a taxi to the train station, sees Mortimer and shoots him at an intersection from the backseat of his taxi. The shot is not heard during the traffic noise. The taxi driver, Sponer, sitting in his car with the now-dead Mortimer, goes into a panic. He tells his boss about the incident; but he thinks no one will believe that he is innocent of the murder. So, he places the corpse in a different place and takes the murdered man's luggage to the deceased's wife, Marie Mortimer, and tells her about the incident, too. He comes up with the idea to play the role of Mortimer, so he will not be missed, because some other luggage of his has already been delivered to his hotel in advance. In the hotel room, Winifred Montemayor is looking for Mortimer. He sees that the taxi driver is not Mortimer and suspects him of killing Mortimer.

Having had a daughter with Count Diego and subsequently abandoned by him, Adriana finds work at a large hairdressing salon, thus managing to live a dignified life with her daughter. Mario, the shop's accountant, falls in love with her, but she rejects him, ashamed of her position. One day, Diego returns to Adriana, tells her he is getting married, and proposes to her again ... as his mistress. 

THE MASSEURS AND A WOMAN (1938) * with switchable English subtitles *

The movie opens with Toku and his fellow blind masseur friend Fuku walking down a mountain path, heading for a spa town where they have been hired to serve the guests. Toku develops an affection for a female customer who passed him on his way to the village and whom he recognises by her distinct Tokyo smell. The woman also awakens the interest of guest Shintarō, who arrived together with his little nephew. When a series of thefts occurs, Toku, believing that she is the culprit, wants to help her escape. Instead, he not only learns that she is innocent, but also that she is on the run from her patron whom she dislikes. The next day, she leaves the village in a carriage with a man, possibly her patron, witnessed by Toku and Shintarō and his nephew.

DIE GROSSE SCHLACHT DES DON CAMILLO (1955) * with switchable English subtitles *

In the small town of Brescello, the seemingly endless war between the village priest Don Camillo and the communist mayor Bottazzi --- known as "Peppone" --- enters a new round. This time, everything revolves around the election of a representative for the Italian parlament. Peppone is running as a candidate of the Communist Party. Don Camillo is anything but benevolent about this and tries to sabotage Peppone's campaign as best he can.

The subject of this dramatic "documentary" is the rigorous preparation for the Franco-Prussia War by Bismarck and leading Prussian military officers, who, with the help of both the liberal and conservative Berlin press, created the atmosphere in which the publication of the heavily redacted "Ems Dispatch" had the desired effect Bismarck hoped for. This TV-movie's authenticity is supported by documentary material, albeit its interpretation by DDR television is questionable to a point.

DER FUCHS VON GLENVARON (1940)

Odette Sansom, a Frenchwoman living in England, is recruited by the SOE to return to France and work with the Underground. Before leaving for France, she leaves her three children in a convent. Soon after landing in occupied Europe, she is captured and turned over to the Gestapo for interrogation. Severely tortured, she nevertheless tells her captors nothing. Another agent she worked closely with --- Peter Churchill --- was also captured. Though he was in no way related to the British prime minister, Odette tells the Gestapo he is and that the two of them are married. This bit of quick thinking might save her life; for when their enemies start closing in on Germany, her captors ensure she stays alive in Ravensbruck Concentration Camp to use as a negotiating pawn with the Allies.

Beautiful Halka falls in love with rich nobleman Janusz and rejects Jontek, a Goral (highlander) who adores her. Jontek soon discovers, however, that the nobleman's promises of love can't be trusted. 

SIGN OF THE PAGAN (1954)

Roman centurion Marcian is captured by Attila the Hun en route to Constantinople, but escapes. On arrival, he finds the Eastern Roman emperor Theodosius plotting with Attila to look the other way while the latter marches against Rome. Marcian, however, gains the favor of Pulcheria, lovely sister of Theodosius, who favors a united Empire. As Attila marches, things look bleak for the weakened imperial forces. But the conqueror is in awe of the power of the Christians' God.

UN AVVENTURA DI SALVATOR ROSA (1939) * with switchable English subtitles *

The Kingdom of Naples, 17th century. Spanish oppression becomes increasingly bloody after a popular revolt led by Masaniello. Famous painter Salvator Rosa is also a masked hero who fights against the arrogance and oppression the nobles impose on the poorer classes. He' become the notorious Ant , a friend of the people; a skilled swordsman; and a daring inventor of hoaxes against the viceroy of Naples and Count Lamberto, his adviser. In Torniano, where he goes to find some rest from his labors, Rosa is confronted by the arrogance of Count Lamberto, who not only aspires to the hand of a capricious duchess, but oppresses the peasants of the countryside. He thus resumes the mask of the 'Ant' and begins a dangerous game to beat the count.

GENERAL PANKRATOV S DAUGHTER (1934)

The year is 1905. A revolution against the tsarist oppressor is breaking out in the Polish lands under Russian rule. Aniuta, daughter of General Pankratov, commander of the Warsaw gendarmerie, falls in love, and the feeling is mutual, with a Polish revolutionary, Bolesław Ratomski, whom she accidentally meets. Her father insists on her marriage to a Russian officer, Cavalry Captain Count Andrei Bobrov, which would strengthen the general's position, as his superiors cannot forgive his marriage to a Polish woman. Out of love for her father, Aniuta agrees, and the engagement is soon to be announced. However, when Aniuta meets with her mother's relative, Mrs. Ratomska, who turns out to be the mother of her beloved, long-forgotten feelings are reawakened. Shocked by the sight of the brutal suppression of a demonstration of Polish patriots by Bobrov, she returns the engagement ring. Her heart beats ever stronger for the Polish cause. Meanwhile, a secret militant organization is planning an assassination attempt on the universally hated General Pankratov. Bolesław, unaware that Aniuta is his daughter, is to carry out the task.

TWO FILM DVD: GLEN OR GLENDA (1953) + BLACK MASS (1928)

The first part of the film begins with a narrator called The Scientist making cryptic comments about humanity.  The film proper opens with Inspector Warren finding the corpse of a male transvestite named Patrick/Patricia, who has committed suicide.  Wanting to know more about cross-dressing, Warren seeks out Dr. Alton, who narrates for him the story of Glen/Glenda.  However, at several points Alton appears to address the viewer rather than Inspector Warren, and the unclear role of the Scientist as narrator makes things even more confusing.  Glen is shown studying women's clothes in a shop window.  Dr. Alton points out that men's clothes are dull and restrictive, whereas women can adorn themselves with attractive clothing.  He also makes some bizarre statements, such as that baldness is caused by hats.  Glen reads about sex change operations in a newspaper, then meets with Barbara, his girlfriend, who asks if Glen's secret problem is another woman. The film then cuts to the infamous shot of the Scientist shouting "Pull the string!" as bison stampede onscreen.  It is not clear what this is meant to mean; perhaps that Glen should act as puppeteer, controlling his own life instead of letting others dictate it.  Another transvestite friend of his, John, tells Glen how cross-dressing ended his marriage.  A bizarre dream sequence, containing some BDSM pornography, follows.  Glen then decides to tell Barbara the truth.  She offers her angora sweater as a sign of acceptance.

1928 French film purportedly showing a Satanic ritual, though anyone with a knowledge of Black Witchcraft would probably get a good giggle out of it, since the film seems to portray what those who are not Satanists would believe goes on in such meetings.  Sort of like a film a propagandist would make, who wanted to show what Freemasons did in their back rooms, but in reality never met one in his life.

The six-minute film, rather incredible for its time when you consider what was actually showing in theatres during the 20s/30s, apparently uses the "Satanic" label to show things, which would otherwise be too blunt, daring and challenging to social norms to show:  vampirism, BDSM, lesbianism, etc.  Within its short length, the film goes from bondage/discipline with a veneer of the occult thrown in to justify its title to outright porn film.  Not the kind of film you want to show while the kids and grandparents are around.

TWO FILM DVD: THE PRIVATE LIFE OF DON JUAN (1934) + A LADY S PROFESSION (1933)

THE PRIVATE LIFE OF DON JUAN (1934): Don Juan is aging. He's arrived secretly in Seville after a 20-year absence. His wife Dolores, with whom he hasn't lived for five years, still loves him. He refuses to see her. She has bought his debts and will remand him to jail for two years, if he doesn't come to her. Meanwhile, an impostor is climbing the balconies of Seville claiming to be Don Juan. When a jealous husband kills him, the real Don Juan sees a way to avoid jail and get some peace. He hides in a small town. After six months, he's ready to return to society. 

A LADY'S PROFESSION (1933): An English nobleman and his sister are part of an aristocratic family down on their luck. How do they keep the money coming in? By running a speakeasy at a riding club. Good luck with that! 

DER MAJORATSHERR (1944)

A few days before the planned wedding of the chief inheritor von Halleborg, he experiences a terrible blow: his beloved bride Julia has a riding accident and dies of her injuries. Das Volk wendet sich ebenso gegen ihn wie sein Hofstaat, der Ludwig immer weiter von der Au enwelt isoliert. In geistiger Umnachtung sieht sich der Monarch schlie lich von Feinden umgeben und findet den Tod im Starnberger See.

History film about the last years of Ludwig II of Bavaria, who has a breakdown because of his ambitious vision of sole dedication to the artistic perfection of his kingdom.  The people turn against him as well as his court, which, in turn, isolates Ludwig even more from the outside world.  Mentally deranged, he imagines himself surrounded by enemies and ends up finding death in the Starnberger See.

THE SPY IN BLACK (1939)

Captain Hardt, a World War I German U-boat commander, is ordered to lead a mission to attack the British Fleet at Scapa Flow. He sneaks ashore on the Orkney Islands to meet his contact, Fr ulein Tiel. Tiel has taken over the identity of local schoolteacher, Miss Anne Burnett, who had been kidnapped by German agents. Hardt finds himself attracted to her, but Tiel shows no interest. The Germans are aided by a disgraced Royal Navy officer, the former Commander Ashington, who, according to Tiel, has agreed to aid the Germans after losing his command due to drunkenness. Tiel implies that she has slept with Ashington to obtain his cooperation. Now equipped with the crucial information he needs about the fleet movements, Hardt makes rendezvous with his submarine to arrange the attack. Returning to the house, and confident that all is going to plan, Hardt make advances to Tiel, but she rebuffs him. She leaves the house, believing she has locked Hardt in, but he gets out and secretly follows her, discovering that she has gone out to meet Ashington. Hardt overhears them talking and learns the truth - the British are fully aware of his presence and his mission, and his 'contacts' are really British double-agents.

DER ENGEL MIT DEM SAITENSPIEL (1944)

Achim und Vera sind befreundet und f hren ein unbeschwertes und fr hliches Leben. Bis sie sich ernsthaft dar ber streiten, wie sie die Silvesternacht verbringen wollen. Vera will mit Freunden feiern, w hrend Achim eine einsame Bergh tte vorzieht. So f hrt er allein in die Berge. In der H tte begegnet er der Studentin Susanne, gemeinsam verbringen sie die Silvesternacht, lernen sich kennen und lieben. Doch durch eine ungl ckliche Verwechslung verlieren sie sich aus den Augen. Auch ihre Namen und Adressen haben sie nicht ausgetauscht, und so wird ein Wiedersehen fast unm glich.

Achim and Vera are friends and live an uncomplicated and happy life .... that is, until they get into their first serious argument on how they should spend New Years' Eve. Vera wants to celebrate with friends, while Achim wants to go off to a lonely mountain hut. And so, he goes off alone into the mountains. In the hut, he meets the student Susanne, with whom he spends New Years' Eve; gets to know well; and falls in love with. Unfortunately, through misfortune, they lose sight of each other afterwards. They didn't even bother to exchange names and addresses! And so, with Craigslist not yet in existence, it seems very unlikely they'll ever see one another again.

TANZMUSIK (1935)

On the way home from a successful international concert, the singer Mario gets to know the girl Gina, which will serve as a pretext for the familiar pattern of love-entertainment so typical for 30s movie entertainment.

GLUCKLICHE REISE (1933)

A musical comedy:  Two young Germans living in South America as farmers, suffer from loneliness and seek penpals from the Fatherland.  A perky employee in a travel agency in Hamburg answers them both.  She tells one she s rich; to the other, she represents herself under a friend s name, who knows nothing about the whole sordid affair and who is already engaged.  Things get a bit sticky when the two men visit Germany and realize they ve got the hots for the two ladies. 

Musikalisches Lustspiel: Zwei junge Deutsche, die in S damerika als Farmer leben, leiden unter Einsamkeit und suchen Brieffreundinnen in der Heimat. 12-year old David lives in a small village in Austria.  He s an orphan, in a sense, because after his birth out of wedlock, his mother Monika had to leave the village and went off to a city without taking the child with her.  David himself grew up in the poor house and was raised, among others, by the village priest.  Monika returns to the village one day with a Viennese worker by the name of Karl, her new husband, in order to become a good mother to David.  David, however, turns away from her and runs away.  Karl, too, is critical of Monika and feels he s been betrayed by her. 

Der zw lfj hrige David lebt in einem kleinen Dorf in sterreich. Er ist Halbwaise, da seine Mutter Monika nach seiner unehelichen Geburt das Dorf verlassen musste und in die Stadt gezogen ist. David selbst w chst im Armenhaus auf und wird unter anderem vom Dorfpfarrer aufgezogen. Monika kehrt eines Tages mit dem Wiener Arbeiter Karl, ihrem neuen Mann, in das Dorf zur ck, um David eine gute Mutter zu sein. Der jedoch wendet sich von ihr ab und l uft davon. Auch Karl steht Monika bald kritisch gegen ber, w hnt er sich doch von ihr betrogen.

DIE VIER MUSKETIERE (1934)

Four comrades of the First World War, all of entirely different personalities and occupations, hold together through all they experience in battle.  Years after the War, they meet again at a reunion.  It turns out, one of them has gone in a totally different direction politically.  The four, who earlier were all of one mind, now go their separate ways in chaotic conflict.
 
Vier Kameraden des Weltkriegs, ganz unterschiedliche Charaktere und aus den verschiedensten Berufen, halten in jeder Lebenslage zusammen. Jahre nach dem Krieg treffen sie sich zu einer Wiedersehensfeier. Es stellt sich heraus, da ein jeder sich politisch in eine v llig andere Richtung entwickelt hat. Die Vier, die sich fr her immer einig waren, gehen v llig uneins auseinander.

GRUSS UND KUSS VERONIKA (1933)

Little Veronika is a saleslady in a flower shop.  Mr. Rainer is a good customer, for he sends lots of flowers every month to a variety of women.  Veronika is pissed off, however, because she loves Mr. Rainer.  But what she doesn t know is that Rainer is a businessman and has the trick of sending his payment reminders with a bouquet of flowers.

Die kleine Veronika ist Verk uferin in einem Blumengesch ft. Herr Rainer ist dort ein guter Kunde, denn er schickt jeden Monat mehreren Damen Blumen. Veronika ist ihm deshalb b se, denn sie liebt Herrn Rainer. Was sie nicht wissen kann: Rainer ist Gesch ftsmann und hat den Tick, seine Zahlungserinnerungen mit einem Blumenstrau zu verschicken.

PEER GYNT (1934)

Peer Gynt can be considered as a bittersweet play about a Norwegian anti-hero.  Peer Gynt is the son of the once highly-regarded Jon Gynt.  Jon Gynt spent all his father's money on feasting and living lavishly, until there was nothing left; thus, Jon had to go from his farm as a wandering salesman, leaving his wife and son behind in debt.   se, the mother, wished to raise her son to wield and restore the lost fortune of his father, but Peer is soon to be considered useless for practical tasks, somewhat of a poet and a braggart, not unlike the Norwegian youngest son from the fairy tales, the "Ash Lad", with whom he shares some characteristics.
