Ignaz Nagler, the strict mayor of an Austrian village, not only refuses to allow his son to marry a Viennese woman, but is insistent on not allowing forty illegitimate children to come to the village on a state planned vacation in the countryside. As if that all weren't enough, two reporters have shown up and are making his life a living hell. Only after the social worker Kitty Schroder pretends to be the mayor's own illegitimate daughter is his resistance to the children overruning the village finally overcome.

Der sittenstrenge Bürgermeister Ignaz Nagler lehnt nicht nur die Heirat seines Sohnes mit einer Wienerin ab, sondern er verweigert auch vierzig unehelichen Kindern den von der Landesregierung vorgesehenen Ferienaufenthalt. Durch zwei Reporter werden die Verwicklungen noch vergrößert. Erst als sich die Fürsorgeschwester Kitty Schröder als des Bürgermeisters uneheliche Tochter ausgibt, wird dessen Widerstand schließlich überwunden.
