Although the Indians were assured their lands adjacent to the Black Hills by treaty, the Whites want to expel them. Meanwhile, gold has been discovered there and the unscrupulous settler, Red Fox, demands of Mattotaupa, chief of the Bears Clan belonging to the Dakota tribe, to reveal to him the location of a cave with gold deposits. Mattotaupa refuses and is stabbed to death by Red Fox in the presence of his son, Tokei-ihto. Lieutenant Roach orders Tokei-ihto to Fort Smith in order to negotiate. The son of the slain chief suspects that the Whites are planning an ambush, a fear that is confirmed when he encounters Red Fox there. 

Im Jahre 1874 wird der Indianer Mattotaupa in einer Blockhütte von dem weißen Verbrecher Red Fox ermordet, da er das Versteck des Goldenen der Indianer nicht verraten wird. Dieser Mord wird von seinem Sohn Tokei-ihto mit angesehen. Als Kriegshäuptling der Bärenbande vom Stamme der Oglala versetzt Tokei-ihto die Weißen durch Überfälle in ständige Unruhen und sprengt das Fort, das an dem Platz steht, an welchem sein Vater getötet wurde, in die Luft. Zwei Jahre nach dem Mord wird Tokei-ihto zu einer Friedenskonferenz in das wieder aufgebaute Fort eingeladen. Durch Verrat wird er verhaftet und über Monate in einem Keller gefangen gehalten. Nach seiner Freilassung schließt Tokei-ihto, die Reservation mit der Bärenbande zu verlassen und nach Kanada zu ziehen. Der Weg dorthin ist aber sehr beschwerlich. Es muss nicht nur der Missouri überquert werden, sondern auch feindliche Indianer getrotzt werden. Doch die schlimmste Gefahr folgt der Bärenbande, der Mörder Mattotaupas, der es auf Tokei-ihto abgesehen hat.
