Undoubtedly, the Eastern Front was THE theatre of operations during the Second World War and it was there that the outcome of the War -- and the fate of the free world -- was determined. And yet, it is a campaign which has yielded only minimal amounts of first hand film coverage; at least in the West. This DVD is meant to narrow that gap by providing film coverage of the war in the East, as seen by the Germans.

The film consists of four short stories about the suffering of the people of Cuba during the Batista dictatorship and the reaction of the island's populace, ranging from passive acceptance to active resistance by the revolutionary guerrillas. Between the stories, the film's narrator says such things as, "I am Cube; the Cuba of the casinos; but also the Cuba of the people." The first story shows the contrast between the destitute Cuban masses and the splendor of the island's casinos for vacationing Americans and the prostitutes they frequent in Havana. The second story shows the burning of a sugar cane field when a farmer discovers he's going to lose his land to the United Fruit Company. The third story deals with the repression of rebellious students at the University of Havana (covered in long detail by the camera); and the final story shows the farmers, who are helping the rebels in the Sierra Maestra, which, in the end, results in the triumphal march to Havana to proclaim the revolution.

Of all Puccini's major operas, the intimate tragedy of Madama Butterfly is least in need of elaborate staging and might therefore benefit most from the close scrutiny of film. The story is domestic, the setting Spartan, the incidental characters kept to a minimum. The cast is a superb one, headed by Pl cido Domingo's rakish Pinkerton and Mirella Freni's rubicund Butterfly. Their singing is incomparable, as is Herbert von Karajan's musical direction of the Vienna Philharmonic.
