Old Count Egge is obsessed with his passion for hunting. The young hunter Franz, whose father was shot by a poacher, is the Count's forester. But the hunter Schipper is quite the opposite of Franz: mean, intriguing, and always taking care to push the Count to take more dangerous risks. The Count's children observe his activities with worry. His son Tassilo is a lawyer and a friend of the poor. He's in love with the daughter of a bourgeois, who is in a legal dispute with the Count. Stunning scenery, somewhat ruined by graphic hunting scenes, contribute to this story of the old Count Egge Sennefeld, whose life is eccentrically dedicated to his passion for hunting. He has hardly a relationship with his children, but yet holds to his patriarchal belief that no child of his will marry a bourgeois. Nonetheless, his daughter Kitty has fallen for a lowly painter; his son Willi is secretly pursuing a dairy maid; and his other son Tassilo wants to marry an opera singer. Then there's his son Robert, who's slowly milking daddy to death to pay off his gambling debts. When the Count hears of Tassilo's plans to marry a singer, he disowns him. He finally rejects Robert, when the latter comes for more money to pay off gambling misadventures.

Until the 1990s and the final fall of Communism in the former Soviet Union, a great deal of film, both documentary and drama, about the Great Patriotic War was almost completely off-limits to the West. This included a great deal of captured German archival material, which was locked away in vaults and only re-discovered in the following century. Still, a great deal of these materials are still hard to come by west of the Bug River and nearly completely unknown across the Atlantic.
Classic German film based on the legendary Swiss woodsman, who was an expert with his crossbow. In 1307, Austrian soldiers arrive at a Swiss village and inform the locals they must bow before their authority. Tell (Hans Marr) is the unofficial leader of the villagers and he refuses to acknowledge the Austrians as superiors. This angers the Austrian commander (Conrad Veidt), who makes Tell shoot an apple off the top of his son's head. Tell completes the task successfully, but the two men become bitter enemies with Tell's defiance sparking a revolt against the Austrian soldiers.

It is Ireland, 1903. Michael O'Brien, the son of an Irish rebel against the English crown, is sent -- like many of his fellow Irish schoolmates of the day -- to an English boarding school, where along with his English colleagues he is to learn to grow up to be a proper Englishman. After a time, he gets to know a new student, Patrick, an Irishman raised in America. While visiting Michael's family on a school break, Patrick falls in love with Michael's mother. Patrick confides his love to a fellow English schoolmate, who actually works with the British secret service in Ireland and reports Patrick's confidences to them, because Michael's mother turns out to be married to a rebel leader.

The doctor, Vera Meiners, lives with her small daughter, Brigitte. Her former husband, Jan, left her after she met a former lover in a harmless meeting. Without the knowledge of the chief surgeon, Vera orders an operation to be performed and is thereafter fired. Penniless, she works in Spanish nightclubs in order to provide for herself and her child. After many years, she runs into her friend Frank again in one of these nightclubs. Frank informs her that he can make it possible for her to emigrate to South America. With the false papers of another doctor, who is a friend of hers and who is dying, she hopes to build a new career.
The famous pianist Orlac suffers an accident one day, in which his hands are badly injured. So as not to take away the meaning of his existence namely, playing piano the surgeon decides to give the hands of a recently executed murderer to Orlac. And while Orlac appears to have made a complete recovery physically, he simply is not able to play as he did before. In addition, Orlac starts to suffer from brutal visions associated with the acts of the hands former owner. Mysterious signs and threatening letters nourish these obsessions. Finally, when his rich father, with whom he was on very bad terms, is found murdered, suspicion naturally falls on Orlac. Is Orlac really the murderer or the victim of some evil plot?

The young Schiller, whose heart and soul is poetry and writing, is forced into a military academy (the pride and joy of the Duke of Wurttemburg). Schiller is appalled and disgusted by the everyday routine of the military -- always back and forth between breeding and drills. Conversation, critique and criticism are highly discouraged. The oppression is intolerable for the young rebel. Incensed at the brutality, he writes the drama, "The Bandit", which he would later publish anonymously. But after a frank discussion with the Duke, Schiller is dishonored and must leave the country.
THE ARRIVAL FROM THE DARKNESS (1921): Richard Bor brings his neighbor, the landowner Drazicky, an old book. In the book Drazicky finds the story of the Mystery of the Black Tower and he falls asleep. He goes into the tower and finds an alchemist's laboratory and the body of a man holding instructions describing how he can be revived. Drazicky successfully carries out the experiment and finds out that the man is his ancestor Jesek Drazicky, who lived during the time of Rudolf II. He had become the apprentice of the alchemist Borro who had entrusted him with the mystery of the elixir of life.
HAXAN (1922): Based partly on the study of the Malleus Maleficarum, a 15th century German guide for inquisitors, H xan is a study of how superstition and the misunderstanding of diseases and mental illness could lead to the hysteria of the witch-hunts. The film was made as a documentary, but contains dramatized sequences that are comparable to horror films. With meticulous recreation of medieval scenes and the lengthy production period, the film was the most expensive Scandinavian silent film ever made, costing nearly two million Swedish krona. Although it won acclaim in Denmark and Sweden, the film was banned in the United States and heavily censored in other countries for what were considered at that time graphic depictions of torture, nudity, and sexual perversion.

Little Klaus is a small farmer, who lives with his wife and seven children in poor conditions. He works from Monday to Saturday on the farm of Big Klaus, a rich farmer. Only on Sundays does Big Klaus lend two large horses to Little Klaus, so he can plow his land with the borrowed animals and his own horse, Hans . He drives the horses on by yelling all my horses , which angers Big Klaus so much, that he kills Little Klaus horse, Hans. In order to continue feeding his family, Little Klaus decides to sell the hide of his now dead horse. On the way to the market, he is overtaken by a bad storm and hopes to overnight in the miller s house.

A young Frenchwoman is exploited and drawn into a life of prostitution: Nick Biaggi runs a finance company that provides unsecured loans to na ve young women a facade for manipulating them into prostitution. He recruits many of these women from abroad and to get them passports, arranges "husbands" for them in marriages of convenience. His newest recruit is Marie Louise "Malou" Beaucaire and her sham husband will be Johnny McVey, a Canadian cab driver who owes money to Nick. When Nick meets Malou, he assumes she is already a prostitute and is amused when she tells him she is not.

Marta Weiss, a Polish Jew, arrives by cattle car at the Auschwitz-Birkenau. She catches the attention of the camp commandant while translating his words from German into Polish to her fellow deportees. When she inquires about the factory at the camp a fellow inmate informs her it's a crematorium and that the rest of her family has been murdered. In the barracks, many of the women are dying and ill. Eugenia, a prisoner-doctor, tries her best to administer to them, but is unable to do much. The women learn that the International Red Cross is coming to the camp to observe the conditions of the prisoners. Eugenia learns a few key phrases in German and is able to tell the observers that everything they see is a lie and that people are dying. The SS tell the observers that Eugenia is mentally ill. Later they torture her to find out who taught her the German phrases, but Eugenia refuses to tell them and is murdered. Eugenia is replaced by Lalunia, a Polish Jew, who claims to have been rounded up by mistake and says she's a doctor, though she's actually only the wife of a pharmacist. However rather than administer medicine to the women of the camp, she distributes them among the kapos in exchange for luxuries like clothes and perfume.

The story concerns a small-time criminal, Franz Biberkopf, fresh from prison, who is drawn into the underworld. When his criminal mentor murders the prostitute whom Biberkopf has been relying on as an anchor, he realizes that he will be unable to extricate himself from the underworld into which he has sunk.
Engineer Jim Ripple invents universal robots to help workers, being himself from a workers' family. He theorizes that cheap production will make all goods so cheap, that Capitalism will fall. The workers do not share his view and his family considers him a traitor. A key element of his invention is a high-capacity capacitor that powers the robots. The government becomes interested in the invention, because the robots can be used as a weapon as well. Ripple is given a top secret factory and funding so that he can produce robots. The robots are controlled either by radio or by sound, for which purpose Ripple uses a saxophone. On the day of a universal workers' strike, the administration of a factory where the Ripple's brother works, located in the same town where the robot producing plant is located, replaces workers with robots. A workers' delegation visits the factory to see that there are no strike breakers, and finds that actually it is the robots who work.
WE WERE ONE MAN (1979) * with switchable English subtitles * Autumn, 1943. Guy lives alone in a cottage in Lot-et-Garonne. He's a simpleton, who draws in a primitive style, ekes out a living in the woods, is vague about his history (claiming he was raised by a cow), and has a girl-friend in the village, Jenine. In the woods, he finds a wounded German soldier and takes him home. Rolf recovers, but Guy won't let him leave, trailing him, grabbing him, challenging him to feats of strength. Rolf stays and a friendship develops between them. Guy tells Jenine about Rolf, but they must keep him hidden or risk punishment as collaborators. When the men's friendship becomes sexual, jealousy and possessiveness bring on tragedy and pathos.
The western Alps, 1786: Balmat, the young son of a farmer, has spent his entire life in a village at the foot of Mont Blanc. The mighty mountain has been a source of magical attraction for him since time immemorial. And this magic has been further enhanced by the myths and legends told to him by his father, which proclaim a huge amount of gold on the mountain's top. But there's a catch: Powerful mountain spirits guard that treasure fiercely. When Balmat becomes an adult, he decides to finally climb to the summit. A scholar from France, who's arrived in the village, is causing great unrest: he's offering to pay a thousand pieces of gold to anyone, who'll bring him to the mountain's summit. Thus, a race begins among the townspeople to prove they can climb to the top; but no one is successful: climbing conditions are too difficult and no one has the sufficient equipment to do it. Only Balmat --- who, with the exception of Maria, who's in love with him, is derided by everyone for his obsession with the mountain --- is able to go further than anyone else up the mountain.

In 1961, Toho Studios put out a blatantly preachy anti-nuke film entitled Sekai daisens . It was basically their version of On the Beach minus any subtlety or allegory. Their goal was to use all their technical skill to present a film as realistic as possible in describing what would happen to Japan in the event of a worldwide, nuclear holocaust. The film was later dubbed into English and released as The Last War. Similar to On the Beach, sailors aboard a merchant vessel express their wish to return to Tokyo, even though they'll eventually die of radiation poisoning. Told in flashbacks, the tale of a Japanese family is set against the backdrop of worsening international tensions between the two superpower alliances which dominate the world. Eventually, air patrols from both sides fire upon one another over the Arctic using air-to-air nuclear missiles (to take out three planes at a time?!?). The unidentified, but obviously communist, bloc's tanks crosses the 38th Parallel in Korea, but are soon stopped. So, they decide the best way to deal with incompetence is to set off nuclear missiles, some of which head for Japan. There's panic in the streets, as millions flee (which, of course, people in Japan do well, having run away from Godzilla, Mothra, Gorgo, Kong, Rodan and God-knows-how-many-other monsters, which always seem to attack Japan whenever they wake up from a deep sleep). Since Ronald Reagan wasn't politically important enough at the time to suggest a Star Wars' anti-missile defense system, there's nothing left to do but wait at home for Armageddon. It doesn't take long: Tokyo is extinguished in a blast and subsequent fire storm. Models of Washington, London, Paris and Moscow are wiped off the face of the Earth, too.
