Il Cardinale Massaia, prima di recarsi nuovamente in Abissinia, cerca di ottenere degli appoggi da parte del Governo piemontese ma, nonostante l'interessamento che per lui e per la sua opera dimostra il Conte di Cavour, il Gabinetto non aderisce. L'intrepido missionario parte allora, come sempre, da solo e fidando nella Divina Provvidenza. Accolto dall'amicizia cordiale e sincera, anche se interessata, del Re Menelik, può in breve organizzare la sua missione e diffondere per quasi tutto il territorio etiopico l'opera benefica del proprio apostolato. L'Abuna Atanasio, capo della Chiesa Copta, cerca con ogni mezzo di ostacolare l'opera del missionario cattolico e di ottenerne l'espulsione. Non riuscendo presso Menelik, l'Abuna scismatico ricorre all'imperatore e in breve scoppia la guerra tra il Negus Neghesti e il suo ribelle vassallo Menelik. Il Massaia, per far finire il conflitto, preferisce spontaneamente allontanarsi, lasciando come germoglio di messi future il giovane sacerdote indigeno che egli stesso ha consacrato. 

Cardinal Massaia, about to return to Abyssinia, tries to get the support of the government of Piedmont for the work he is doing in Africa.  However, as much as the Count of Cavour is interested in Massaia and his activities, Piedmont's cabinet can't be bothered.  Thus, the intrepid missionary sets out on his own, trusting in Divine Providence.  Upon arrival, he is sincerely welcomed by King Menelik, who allows Massaia to organize a mission and perform charitable work throughout all of Ethiopia.  Abuna Athanasius, head of the Coptic Church in the region, does all he can to hinder the activities of the Catholic missionary and to have the man expelled.  Failing to convince the king of the need to get rid of Messaia, Abuna causes a schism between the ruler and the warring tribes, who pay fealty to him.  Rebellion breaks out and Massaia, aware that he's the cause of the conflict, decides to leave and puts a young, native priest he consecrated in charge of the charitable work still to be done.
