Lena, the daughter of the village elder, Kreyenborg, always lets the young veterinarian Peter Renken out of her bedroom window. She has to, because her parents are against their love. Lena has been promised to Gustav, who is to inherit a large estate. Maria, who has arrived on a visit from the city, has the hots for Gustav; but that’s okay, because Gustav likes her, too. But promises are promises, and it’s infinitely much better to keep your word and make everyone miserable than to back out of a promise most of the people involved don’t want kept.

Immer früh, wenn der Hahn kräht, lässt Lena, die Tochter des Gemeindevorstehers Kreyenborg, den jungen Tierarzt Peter Renken aus ihrem Schlafzimmerfenster hinaus. Doch ihre Eltern sind gegen diese Liebe, denn Lena ist Gustav versprochen, der einen großen Hof erben wird. Auf Gustav wiederum hat es Marie abgesehen, die zu Besuch aus der Stadt gekommen ist. Gustav mag sie auch – aber schließlich hat er ein Versprechen gegeben.
