Joseph Rouletabille, journalist, goes to a reception at the Élysée, where he meets Mathilde Stangerson, who is engaged to Robert Darzac. After an intriguing discussion with Robert, Mathilde leaves with her father, and it's announced that she's broken off her engagement. That same evening, Mathilde is the victim of an assassination attempt in the yellow room. Problem: the window and the door are hermetically sealed from the inside. How did the assassin get out of the room?

Après une douteuse et intrigante discussion avec Robert, Mathilde part avec son père, et l'on annonce qu'elle a rompu ses fiançailles. Le soir même, Mathilde est victime d'une tentative d'assassinat, dans la chambre jaune. Problème : la fenêtre et la porte étant hermétiquement fermées de l'intérieur, comment l'assassin est-il sorti de la chambre?
