An intertitle, which is seen shortly after this film about a dog’s life begins, states, “… and with this step into freedom began Krambambuli’s journey into the great, wide world.  Had he suspected what awaited him out there, he surely would have returned straightaway to his basket and stayed at home”.  The film concerns a homeless man, who finds and befriends the pup; eventually finding a job at an inn, where he falls in love with a co-worker, whose heart is meant for another.  Krambambuli ends up with her and the new love after the homeless man temporarily disappears and the dog is later caught in the impossible situation of having to be loyal to two masters; with disastrous results for all involved.  This is a Heimatfilm without the usual happy ending.  Bring a handkerchief and flush most of the sleeping pills and liquor down the toilet before you watch it.  You’ve been warned!

Von einem Wurf junger Hunde entwischt einer in die Welt und wird nach einer Reihe von Abenteuern, die sie das bunte Leben offenbart, von dem Landstreicher Thomas Werndl aufgefunden, auf den Namen „Krambambuli“ getauft und auf die Wanderschaft mitgenommen. Nach langer Irrfahrt, während der Krambambuli allmählich erwächst, findet Thomas Unterkunft und Arbeit auf dem Hofe der Witwe Crescentia Sonnleitner. Zwischen ihm und deren Tochter Anna, die dem Jäger Barthel Raunegger versprochen ist, entspringt sich eine stille Liebe, die aber an einem Sonntag jäh endet, als Thomas sich vor einer großen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Jäger betrinkt und Anna dadurch schwer enttäuscht. In gereizter Stimmung verlässt er den Hof, gerät im Wirtshaus, seinen Hund verteidigend, mit Bauernburschen im Streit, verletzt bei einer Rauferei einen von ihnen durch einen Messerstich schwer und wird von dem Gendarmen abgeführt.
