1949: The revolution for its independence from Dutch rule has come to an end in Indonesia. Iskandar, an insurgent, returns home with a strong sense of guilt related to his wartime activities. He is unable to adapt either to life in the military or to being a civilian. And it doesn't help that he's strongly disappointed in what Indonesia has become after finally throwing off the yoke of servitude to the Europeans.
