Der deutsche Ingenieur Hagen ist als Leiter eines großen Industriebetriebs in Südamerika tätig, als er die Nachricht vom Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkrieges erhält. Spontan fasst er den Entschluss, sofort nach Deutschland zurückzukehren, um sich als Freiwilliger bei der Armee zu melden. Auf den Straßen der Stadt hat die Nachricht vom Kriegsbeginn heftige Tumulte ausgelöst, in die auch Hagens Freund, der deutsche Werksmeister Brack, verwickelt wird. Hagen eilt ihm zu Hilfe und wird von einem Messerstich schwer verletzt. Als er wieder zu sich kommt, findet er sich im Haus von Manuela Ortiguez wieder, der jungen Besitzerin der Fabrik, für die er arbeitet. Manuela pflegt Hagen gesund und beginnt ihren Patienten zu lieben.

The story of Karl Ludwig Diehl, a patriotic young German working in South America in 1914, trying to get back to his Fatherland. But then he was handicapped by being taken from a neutral passenger ship by a British cruiser, by a sojourn in and a daring escape from a concentration camp in Jamaica and by the persistent love of Brigitte Horney, disguised as the Ibero-American owner of the factory where he was employed as an engineer when the World War began. It required considerable time and much reasoning to convince the señorita that a man's country came before his sweetheart. As a screen reward for his patriotism, Herr Diehl finally arrived in German waters, accompanied by the señorita ready to become a Frau. This picture is well photographed and the acting is excellent, although at times Herr Diehl seems a little too calm for a man presumably torn between love and duty. Herr Speelmans is first rate as another German lucky enough to reach home. The scenes on the high seas, in the camp and in Cuba are very realistic, although probably "shot" in the Canary Islands.
