From the people who hatched such historical and cultural oddities as Communism, Nesting Dolls and last, but certainly not least, Vladimir Putin (the Josef Stalin of the 21st Century and admirer of Donald Trump's politcal savoir faire), comes the story of Father Frost, who, like Socialism, shows up way too late in the story to be of much use to anyone.  Rather, the fairy tale actually centers around a boy and girl who endure the strangest situations just to be with one another.  The boy meets a Mushroom Pixie, who turns our lad into a bear and if that weren't enough, later meets up with an evil witch who controls trees a la Wizard of Oz and doesn't like our hero simply ... because.  Then there's the object of boy-turn-bear:  a girl given the Cinderella treatment by her mother and whose sister is jealous of her long-braided hair.  If you find this just a tad to bizarre to believe, let me assure you that I don't do drugs and didn't imagine all of this (though I suspect dropping acid or smoking a joint while watching this might make the surreal seem all too logical).  Strange as the tale may be, the pageantry, colors and simple enjoyment make the film a must-see.

LIEBE 47 (1949) * NOW with switchable English subtitles *

Film adaptation of the play, “Draussen vor der Tur” by Wolfgang Borchert with additional flashbacks and a conciliatory end:  Beckmann, returning back home after being held as a POW in the Soviet Union, finds out, that while he was cooling his heels in a prison camp in Siberia, his wife took up with another man and his son is dead.  He desperately seeks a way out of this life, for, as he puts it, “he can’t go on anymore”.  But then he meets Anna Gehrke on the banks of the Elbe, a young widow, who also “can’t go on anymore”.  And both then tell their stories.

U-BOOTE WESTWÄRTS (1941)

* with hard-encoded English subtitles * IMPROVED QUALITY

http://www.rarefilmsandmore.com/Media/Thumbs/0006/0006650-u-boote-westwarts-1941-with-hard-encoded-english-subtitles-.jpg

This movie was shot on real u-boats (most of them are Type II and IX/B) and used a lot of real U-Boat crewmen as actors. The movie depicts the personal problems, hopes and fears of the crew. But it also deals with what they were there to do: sink ships and kill people. The enemy, in this movie the Englishman, is, surprisingly, fairly represented.

SOME TRIVIA: The maximum diving depth of 80 meters shown in the movie is incorrect. A type IX/B-boat was able to go down 230 meters and sometimes 260 meters or even more! It was limited to 80 meters in the movie because the real diving depth of the German submarines was kept a secret during the War.

GOLD (1934) * with switchable English subtitles *

IMPROVED QUALITY

http://www.rarefilmsandmore.com/Media/Thumbs/0001/0001765-gold-1934-with-switchable-english-subtitles-.jpg

This little known movie is probably one of the best sci-fi movies made in the 1930's. Brigitte Helm, here in one of her last screen-roles, plays the femme fatale. The film tells the story of two scientists, who have discovered a way to make gold from lead. They do so by experimenting with radiation. The experiment gets sabotaged by an unscrupulous tycoon, who would like to cash in on this discovery. One of the scientists (Friedrich Kayssler) dies when the lab explodes, the other one (Hans Albers), after recovering from his injuries, tries to find the saboteur. He very soon gets hired by the very person who committed the crime and he pretends to play along with the tycoon's (Michael Bohnen) plans. The tycoon's daughter (Brigitte Helm) helps the hero, and of course, there will be a happy ending. The sets are breathtaking (for its time) and look very real - so real in fact, that during WWII, the Americans confiscated a copy of this movie to find out how advanced the Germans’ use of radioactivity really was! For fans of this genre, this is a must.

HANS WESTMAR (1933)

* with hard-encoded English subtitles * IMPROVED QUALITY

http://www.rarefilmsandmore.com/Media/Thumbs/0003/0003357-hans-westmar-1933-with-hard-encoded-english-subtitles-.jpg

This is an early Nazi propaganda film, and quite a heavy one.   It is set in 1929/30, mostly in Berlin, where Communists (KPD), Social Democrats (SPD) and Nazis were battling in the streets for the hearts and souls of the masses.  The hero, Hans Westmar (original working title was "Horst Wessel", the (in)famous SA martyr, but the title had to be changed) is a student, who later gives up his study to work as a taxi driver, "to be nearer to the working class people" (though I suppose they wouldn't ride in a taxi too often).  The bad guys are the Communists, gleefully depicted as coarse manipulators, speaking with "Eastern" accents, and having a feminist woman in their round.  They try to organize the workers into resistance against the Nazis, with their apartment buildings decorated in red flags and banners.   But the upcoming election campaign will be a much more brutal fight to the death than either side expects.  And that fight to the death will involve Hans Westmar, too ... in more than just figurative terms.

D III 88 (1939) * with hard-encoded English SUBTITLES* IMPROVED QUALITY

http://www.rarefilmsandmore.com/Media/Thumbs/0004/0004193-d-iii-88-1939-with-hard-encoded-english-subtitles-.jpg

Oberwerkmeister Bonicke has to quit the air force after suffering an injury. After a quarrel between two men leads to a challenge to one of them to make a dangerous flying maneuver, which results in an emergency landing, an order is considered, which would ground both men permanently. Bonicke, however, takes pains to ensure that they'll be able to fly again. This, however, turns out to be no blessing, when they are forced to once again make an emergency landing in the North Sea. Bonicke takes an old plane, a Fokker Dr I with the registration number D III 88 and takes off to find the men. He's successful in doing so and leads a ship to their rescue, but is killed in the process of doing so.

The film, Kampfgeschwader Lutzow, is in part a continuation of this story.

EROICA (1949) * with switchable English subtitles *

http://www.rarefilmsandmore.com/Media/Thumbs/0006/0006638-eroica-1949-with-switchable-english-subtitles-.jpg

Napoleon is marching on Vienna.  While many of the city's citizens acknowledge the fact with horror, the composer Ludwig van Beethoven speaks passionately for the revolutionary Bonaparte.  He even composes an "Eroica" symphony for Napoleon, but then becomes bitterly disappointed when the Corsican seizes the imperial crown and its power.  Not only does Beethoven then cross out the dedication to Napoleon on his symphony, but flees Vienna when an invitation from the emperor to perform before him is brought to Beethoven by French emissaries.  Beethoven leaves for Hungary, where he will meet the love of his life ... and whom he'll eventually have to give up.  Eventually returning to Vienna, he is plagued by an ever-worsening deafness, which leads him to despair and desperation.  Nevertheless, he continues to work tirelessly, even creating new works.

Lyuba, a girl from the lower end of society, is in love with the spoiled, officer Dodja, but her love is merely an amusement for this soldier from the upper class of society. Lyuba's husband, a much older man, who steps aside or the sake of his wife's happiness, but monitors her life protectively thereafter, is disappointed in the officer's lack of honor and willingness to use Lyuba and cast her aside.  Eventually, the situation will escalate to tragedy for all involved.

What a good citizen and subject, an unquestioning follower of orders, and an average man like all of us can turn into is demonstrated by Theodor Kotulla's portrayal of Rudolf Hoess (called "Fritz Lang" in the film and played by Goetz George), commandant of Auschwitz Concentration Camp from 1940 til the end and who ended up being hanged there by the Poles in 1947. The film, based on Robert Merle's novel, "Death is My Trade", successfully balances fact and fiction, making the whole thing seem historically factual and providing a valuable lesson to the viewer.  In line with the times, just a short time before the TV-series Holocaust made its appearance, the violence associated with the subject is "sanatized" and only barely hinted at.  Nevertheless, the monologue at film's end, detailing the "special handling" of the transports which arrived at Birkenau's ramps up to and including the eventual gassing of the majority of the deported, is as catastrophic in its graphic nature as it is distressing in its monotone delivery.

THE VICTORY DAY PARADE IN MOSCOW (2014) & MORE

http://www.rarefilmsandmore.com/Media/Thumbs/0006/0006578-the-victory-day-parade-in-moscow-2014.jpg

VICTORY DAY PARADE  (2014)
Originally filmed in high definition, but since compressed for view on all TVs, what very little of the quality lost is amply made up for by the incredibly brilliant and vibrant colors of the scenery and soldiers of the Russian Federation on parade in Red Square on 09 May 2014, commemorating the defeat of Fascist Germany in the Second World War.  Once scorned and rejected in post-communist Russia, a spirit of pride and nostalgia for the USSR is very much reflected in both the uniforms and paraphernalia of the marching soldiers.  There is no mistaking the praise of both the Soviet Union and its successor, the Russian Federation, in this gathering. Spectacular pageantry!
THE RED ARMY  (1939)
This film, narrated in the English language and put out shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, is anything but hostile to the the Soviet Union and its Red Army. On the contrary, it provides a fascinating look at the Soviet armed forces and includes highlights of recruit training, military maneuvers, and even a performance by the Red Army Ensemble (conducted by the soon-to-be-famous Professor Alexandrov).  The film concludes with a military parade in Red Square.
I SERVE THE SOVIET UNION  (1967)
Unfortunately, this film is a bit disappointing.  It's an English-language excerpt of the abovementioned film commemorating the 1967 Soviet military exercise, which took place shortly before the 50th anniversary of the Russian Revolution.  The exercise involved more than 500,000 soldiers and pitted "western" troops against Soviet forces in a battle for Soviet territory.  The filming of the event was co-opted by the U.S. Department of Defense for use in basic training (as I remember only too well and which I'm sure former veterans will probably recall, too).  The film was meant to both enlighten, awe and scare American recruits into developing a respect and wariness for their Warsaw Pact enemies.  However, while the audio is good enough (and accurate, though also loaded with anti-Soviet propaganda), the print is washed out, had a very strong red tint to it (which we removed a lot of) and is not especially good in its visual quality.  Nevertheless, a more than interesting supplement to the subject matter on this DVD.

KAMERADSCHAFT  (1931):
Based on an actual, similar event which took place in 1906, the screenwriters for this movie changed the time frame to right after the First World War, so as to emphasize the inbred emnity between the French and the Germans and the stupidity inherent in blind hate.  It is the early 1920s and the place is a border town where the main occupation for both Frenchmen and Germans alike is coal mining.  An explosion takes place on the French side of a mine shared by both countries and over 600 miners are trapped alive.  Rescuers in France are on the way, but German specialists are actually closer and capable of saving the trapped miners.  Will the Germans be able to overcome their resentment of the Versailles Diktat and the Ruhr occupation to help their former enemies?  Will the French be able to put aside their memories of the Germans laying waste to their land to let the Germans help?
Approximately 86 minutes long; excellent quality film.

ABWEGE  (1928):
Irene Beck believes she's discovered the painter Walter Frank's affection for her after he sketched her profile on a napkin during a visit.  With glances that promise much, he invites her to visit him at his place.  But her husband Thomas Beck doesn't think much of the man and restricts her freedom of movement.  Nevertheless, the two meet secretly and arrange to flee to Vienna, which is thwarted by her husband at the last minute.  Frustrated, Irene buries herself in Berlin's vibrant nightlife, complete with the consumption of alcohol and drugs.  An insignificant affair with the boxer Sam Taylor only alienates the couple even further.

DER SCHATZ  (1923):
In and around a bell maker near Marburg (today Maribor in Slovenia), people tell the story of a treasure that was hidden during the Turkish invasion of 1683, the year the Turkish Army was besieging Vienna. Everybody thinks it's nonsense, except for an old worker there, who feels that the treasure must be in the bell maker's house. A young traveling worker, who has fallen in love with the bell maker's daughter, Beate, makes fun of this, but she convinces him that the old worker is not that nuts. So he starts searching for himself and soon finds it (as does the old worker).  He tells his master, who decides, that the young one has to disappear.

Germany's answer to All Quiet on the Western Front, this 1930 film should be required viewing for any politician, who thinks war is the best answer.  Banned by the Nazis when they came to power three years later, this film does not glorify war, but shows realistically the horror, boredom and discomforts of trench life from "the enemy's" point of view.  The final scene in the hospital is enough to tear one's heart out, even if it is a bit overdramatic by today's standards.  Don't underestimate this film:  it may be slow at times and tedious, and the style a bit outmoded, but the message is powerful.  It is as valid today when hundreds are killed from a distance with missiles as it was back then, when men fought within yards of each other and tens of thousands of soldiers lost their lives advancing those few yards.  The film finishes with the words The End? ... Unfortunately, within a short time thereafter, events proved the question mark to be a valid addendum.

THE WHITE HELL OF PITZ PALU  (1930):
The White Hell of Pitz Palu  (German: Die weiße Hölle vom Piz Palü) is a 1929 silent mountain film directed by Arnold Fanck and Georg Wilhelm Pabst and starring future filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl and World War I flying ace Ernst Udet. The wife of alpinist Dr Johannes Krafft (Gustav Diessl) dies after a crevasse fall. It is implied that the accident was due to his negligence. Ten years later the newlywed Karl Stern (Ernst Petersen) and Maria Majoni (Leni Riefenstahl) arrive in an alpine hut near St. Moritz.  They meet Dr Krafft who is obsessed with the death of his wife and is still searching for her in the mountains.  Together they depart to climb Piz Palü, not knowing that a storm is approaching.  Trapped in the mountain and with Stern having broken his leg they are forced to spend the night on a small ledge.  Dr Krafft who had given his coat to Karl does not survive until the next morning.  Eventually the aviator Ernst Udet (played by himself), who is also a friend of Karl and Maria, finds the couple.  He alerts the rescuers who eventually safely escort Karl and Maria back to the valley.

BALLAD OF A SOLDIER (1959) + DESTINY OF A MAN (1959) *with switchable English subtitles *
BALLAD OF A SOLDIER:  not primarily a war film, the movie recounts, within the context of the turmoil of war, various kinds of love: the romantic love of a young couple, the committed love of a married couple, and a mother's love of her child. The film tells the story of the young soldier Alyosha Skvortsov making his way through the countryside during a time when the Soviet Union seemed destined to fall to the powerful Nazi onslaught. Awarded a six-day leave pass for destroying two tanks, Alyosha makes his way home to visit his mother and to repair the roof of her home. During his journey he encounters the devastation the war has brought on the country and meets a variety of people, giving them hope by virtue of his likable and positive character. Riding in a freight train, he meets Shura and falls in love with her. Finally, he makes it home to his mother; but the reunion is bittersweet.
(88 mins.; excellent quality.  Russian film with English subtitles).

DESTINY OF A MAN:  Made in the same year as "Ballad of a Soldier", this film concerns the fate of a Ukrainian man from the 1920s, when his whole family starved during the Civil War; through his capture and imprisonment in the Great Patriotic War by the Germans in a prisoner of war camp; while in a Nazi concentration camp and his life at War's end.  Discussing in open details subjects usually spurned or covered up by Soviet censors  (the betrayal of Communist and Jews by fellow prisoners; the singling out and extermination of prisoners of Jewish extraction --- usually referred to simply as "Soviet citizens" --- the mistreatment of Soviet prisoners by the Germans; etc.) this is both an entertaining and very informative film very rarely seen these days.
(94 mins.; very good quality.  Russian film with English subtitles).

DARK IS THE NIGHT (1944) * with switchable English subtitles *
One night, a burning plane falls into a city occupied by the Fascists.  A young teacher, her family recently executed by the Germans, discovers three wounded Russians in the basement of the school, where her family had set up their home.  The young woman -- more like an ordinary girl; fragile, helpless and terrified of the enemy -- finds the strength within her to defy the Fascists and their Russian collaborators and to protect the wounded soldiers from being turned over to certain execution at the hands of the conquerors.  The courage and steadfastness, which live in her soul, prove stronger than fear.  The film was shot in Stalingrad a year after the German Sixth Army and their auxiliaries met their end there.
DVD-R is in Russian with switchable English subtitles.  Approx. 76 mins. + a 15 min. contemporary newsreel.  Some pixellization and softness.  A bit shadowy.  Apparently, "dark is the film", too.

DAWNS HERE ARE QUIET (1972) *with switchable English subtitles*
Based on the eponymous book by Boris Vasilyev, the film is set in Karelia (North-West of Russia, near Finland) in 1941 during WWII. In a beautiful and quiet wilderness far from the front-line, there is an anti-aircraft artillery point, where Corporal Vaskov is stationed with a group of young women in training. One of the women, while sneaking from camp to visit her young son, sees two German paratroopers. Vaskov takes five of the women to stop the two paratroopers, but finds sixteen paratroopers instead, leaving the small group of patriots to engage the enemy in an unequal fight.

DER GROSSE VATERLÄNDISCHE KRIEG (1965) * with switchable English subtiltles *
Hitler intended to wipe out the Soviet Union with a Blitzkrieg in the Summer of 1941.  This failed; and in the end, the war which he started came back to the country which launched it.  The reality of this war is shown in mercilessly uncensored, original films taken by 236 Soviet cameramen during the War.  Most of these films remained in archives until the Soviet director Roman Karmen put together his own documentary about the conflict in 1965.  Over two months long, in the middle of 1979, dozens of millions of Soviet citizens sat in front of their TV sets every Tuesday and Friday evening to watch his work.  For the victims and their relatives, the series proved to be an unusual and stirring event.  A lot has been left to fade from memory.  This is especially true for an important part of history which preceded the invasion of the USSR:  the Hitler-Stalin Pact of 1939, whose secret supplementary protocol divided up the states geographically located between Germany and the USSR, to be ruled as each dictator saw fit to do so.  The invasion of the USSR caught the Soviet leadership completely unprepared.  The people of the USSR fought a heroic defensive battle, in which 25 to 40 million citizens and soldiers died.  In spite of the fairly frequent – but accurate – jabs at the West for not opening the Second Front in Europe and in spite of the overtly obvious Communist propaganda, the history shown in this DDR version of the Soviet classic is quite accurate and helps us to understand the sacrifices made and the horror suffered by a nation, whose contribution to the defeat of Nazi Germany is quite often almost ignored in the western world.

FATHER OF A SOLDIER (1964) + ENTHUSIASM: DONBASS SYMPHONY (1930) *with English subtitles*
FATHER OF A SOLDIER:
In this war drama set towards the end of the Great Patriotic War (WWII), a Georgian farmer embarks upon a dangerous journy to find his son.  His travails begin after he learns  that his boy, a soldier recently wounded in battle, is recuperating in the hospital.  The farmer sets off to see him.  This man has an abiding love and respect for the beauty of the land.  As he journeys, he is appalled at the destruction which surrounds him.  Once lush and beautiful, the bombed-out land has become deeply scarred and barren.  He arrives at the hospital, only to discover that his son has been sent back to his tank unit.  The dogged farmer than sets off to find it.  He soon finds himself in the midst of a battle.  This leads him to join the Soviet arm.
(87 mins.; in English and in very good quality).
ENTHUSIASM:  THE DONBASS SYMPHONY  (1930):
Put out in 1930, this not-so-ordinary, Soviet propaganda film chronicles the achievements and exploitations of the mining and industrial workers in the eastern Ukraine.  The films mocks the former bourgeois lifestyle of the Donbass' inhabitants, as well as their slavish subservience to religion and superstition.  The linking of religion and public intoxication with the oppression of the Czarist and bourgeois society is mirrored with the destruction of the orthodox church and the reorganization of the workers in the revolutionary USSR.  It might sound overbearing and boring; but the film is anything but.  And while subtitles are not available, one need not speak Russian to understand what is going on ... nor to miss the point of the film, which, at times, may be rather offensive to traditional, western social ideals.

HOT SNOW  (1974)  * with switchable English subtitles *
Also known as "Goryachiy Sneg", this is another typical Soviet war film, this time about the defense of Moscow before the German fall/winter onslaught of 1941.  Nice action scenes and an expenditure of ammunition as only a socialist economy not answerable to anyone could muster up.

ONLY OLD MEN ARE GOING TO BATTLE (1975) * with switchable English subtitles *
this film has become known as one of the best Russian films about the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945.   The “old men” in this squadron were no older than twenty; but those “wet behind the ears”, reinforcements fresh from flying schools with accelerated training, were not allowed to go to battle for quite a while.   They had yet to experience everything – the heat of the battle, the joy of the first victory over the enemy, the grandeur of a brotherhood strengthened with blood, the first love, and the bitterness of a loss.  Then there came the day when, on hearing the command “only ‘old men’ are going to battle”, it was they who rushed to their planes.  In  its first year at the theatres, the film was seen by 44.3 million viewers – a record in the history of world cinema.  When this war musical was released (1973), audiences thronged at the theatres, asking for a “spare” ticket, and the old, long-forgotten “Darkie” song became very popular again.

THE FALL OF BERLIN (1949) * with switchable English subtitles *
Entertaining, but rather simplistic, film about the war on the Eastern Front, which ultimately led to a Soviet victory in 1945.  It is obvious from the rich, pastel colors of this film, as well as the equipment used in the film's scenes, that no expense was spared in the production of this work.  Viewers with a poor to mediocre understanding of postwar politics will probably be offended by quite a bit of what is shown in the film:  Hitler is shown as a simpleminded buffoon, who, at one point in the film when he loses his temper, is patronized by both Goebbels and Goering and told he is tired and needs to take a rest;  Wehrmacht generals are shown standing up to Hitler and telling him, as early as the offensive on Moscow in 1941, that it is impossible to beat the Soviet Union;  Churchill is shown as a double-crossing, hunchedback creature intent on carrying forth the battle against Bolshevism after Hitler's defeat, no matter what the cost to world peace; and an advisor to the British government is shown visiting Goering in Germany in 1943 to negotiate the sale of chrome and tungsten to shore up Germany's war effort.  It doesn't help that the British representative openly declares that the western Allies have done everything possible to help Germany in its war against the USSR by purposely delaying the opening of a second front in western Europe.  Interestingly, while the Soviet Union was in an all out (cold) war with the west by the time this film was made, Stalin's personal affection for President Roosevelt is clearly shown in the sympathetic portrayal of FDR in the Yalta Conference scene.

This film is much less about historical fact finding or setting the record straight about the USSR's contribution to the defeat of fascism in the Second World War than it is about "drawing the lines".   It is none-too-subtle about convincing even the simplest of viewers that the western Allies in 1949 were simply the heir to Nazism's plans vis-a-vis the peaceloving peoples of the Eastern Bloc.  Still, if you can get past the gross distortions of history and the disgustingly obvious adoration of history's worst mass murderer (Stalin), the film is well worth the investment.

DVD-R IS IN RUSSIAN WITH OPTIONAL ENGLISH SUBTITLES.  APPROXIMATELY 151 MINUTES.
THERE ARE MINOR SOUND ISSUES AND THE PICTURE IS NOT THE SHARPEST  (which is OK, because Stalin wasn't the brightest bulb in the box of dictators), BUT OVERALL, IT'S QUITE WATCHABLE AND WORTH THE INVESTMENT.

HUT TWO WENT THE SOLDIERS (1977) + BEZHIN LUG (1937) * with switchable English subtitles *
HUT TWO, WENT THE SOLDIERS:
Also known as, "One-Two, Soldiers Were Going" and by its Russian title, "Aty-Baty, Shli Soldaty", this richly colored war film talks about how the fathers who went off to war stay forever young and, some 30 years later, how their children end up returning to the place where some of their fathers fought their last heroic battles against the fascists.  Surprisingly low-key in the propaganda department, but "Soviet" nonetheless.
Approximately 82 minutes long and in very good quality.

BEZHIN LUG  (1937):
For those familiar with the works of Sergei Eisenstein, this is a film you will want to add to your collection.  Very close indeed to the story of the child murdered by his grandfather in Stalin's Russia for turning in his father to the authorities for anti-Soviet speech, the plot of this film concerns the murder of a Kolkhoz worker by his father, who objects to his son working for Soviet power.
Only 31 minutes in length, but still very impressive.  Silent film with English intertitles.
