A couple with limited financial resources send their daughter Mariella to a boarding school for the rich; and for the girl's wedding to a wealthy fiancée, they have to set up a luxurious house by resorting to various subterfuges. But at the last moment, the wedding is postponed by a week. Then the creditors show up right away, and the two have to invent a bunch of stories to be able to face them.

Due coniugi di modeste risorse economiche fanno studiare la figlia Mariella in un collegio per ricchi: per il matrimonio della ragazza con un facoltoso fidanzato, devono allestire una casa lussuosa ricorrendo a sotterfugi vari. Ma all'ultimo momento le nozze vengono spostate di una settimana: i creditori si fanno subito vivi, e i due devono inventare un mucchio di storie per poterli fronteggiare.
