Ernst Lubitsch directed this rural comedic version of “The Taming of the Shrew”.  The innkeeper Mathias Kohlhiesel wants to marry off his two very different daughters – there’s the crabby Liesl and the pretty Gretl.  Xaver and Seppl both want Gretl, but father Kohlhiesel has made it clear, that until the old daughter goes, no one gets the pretty, young one.  Xaver marries Liesl .. but only to get Gretl after he dumps her.
