In a certain training school in WWII Germany, officers are created assembly-line like to lead men into battle. In the course of the film, conflict breaks out between a faction who is loyal to Adolph Hitler and one which is nationalistic and anti-war.

Im Jahr 1944 werden Offiziere wie am Fließband für die Front ausgebildet. An einer Heereskriegsschule unter dem Kommando von Major Frey wird während einer Übung der junge Leutnant Barkow durch Sprengstoff getötet. Der idealistische Leutnant Krafft untersucht den Fall und findet heraus, dass der Unfall vorsätzlich herbeigeführt wurde. Seine Bemühungen, die wahren Hintergründe aufzudecken, werden jedoch von der Gestapo behindert.
