The personnel of the special machine and tool factory "Kosmos", along with its owners, are the perfect example for a work community. Kosmos is already 50 years old. And on this occasion, a company outing is planned in the Bavarian Alps, which is to last three days. While the workers and white-collar employees are looking forward to the excursion, the owners are wringing their hands, trying to figure out how to keep the company competitive in this tough field. Wegmueller, the eldest owner, drives off to Hamburg to meet with an American, who will eventually represent the firm in South America. Before leaving, however, he receives a visit from the wife of his younger partner, who wants to withdraw money from the firm. Wegmueller explains to Ursula Rieth that business is not good. This, however, is news to Ursula, and she seeks out her husband to offer him advice and support during these difficult times.

Die Belegschaft der Spezialmaschinen- und Werkzeugfabrik „Kosmos" bildet mit ihren Inhabern eine vorbildliche Betriebsgemeinschaft. 50 Jahre sind es her, dass die „Kosmos" besteht. Aus diesem Anlass wird ein Betriebsausflug in die bayerischen Berge, der drei Tage dauert, angesetzt. – Während sich Arbeiter und Angestellte auf diesen Ausflug freuen, sind die Inhaber, die durch das einzige Konkurrenzunternehmen sehr bedrängt werden, bemüht, den Untergang ihrer Firma aufzuhalten. Wegmüller, der Ältere der beiden, fährt nach Hamburg, um dort mit einem Amerikaner, der die Vertretung für Südamerika übernehmen soll, ins Geschäft zu kommen. – Vor seiner Abreise empfängt er den Besuch der Gattin seines Jüngeren Teilhabers, die, von ihrem, Vetter gedrängt, Geld aus der Firma haben will. Wegmüller klärt Frau Ursula Rieth über die schlechte Lage der Firma auf. Kaum hat Frau Ursula davon vernommen, so ist es ihr erstes, ihren Mann auf seiner Fahrt mit den Angestellten suchen, um ihm helfend mit Rat und Tat in schwerster Zeit zur Seite stehen zu können.
