THE WAR ON THE EASTERN FRONT THROUGH GERMAN EYES III

THE WAR IN THE EAST THROUGH GERMAN EYES III:

Undoubtedly, the Eastern Front was THE theatre of operations during the Second World War and it was there that the outcome of the War -- and the fate of the free world -- was determined.  And yet, it is a campaign which has yielded only minimal amounts of first hand film coverage; at least in the West.  This DVD is meant to narrow that gap by providing film coverage of the war in the East, as seen by the Germans.

FILM # 1:  THE FRONTLINES IN THE EAST - Documentary film about the fighting on the main frontlines in the East, mainly shown through period films.  FILM QUALITY VARIABLE DUE TO THE USE OF DIFFERENT SOURCES.  OVERALL, QUITE GOOD.

FILM # 2:  AN ARMY DIES ON THE DON -  Interesting work about the fighting on the southeastern fronts of the USSR in 1942, which eventually led to the destruction of a large German army and their allies in the fighting around Stalingrad.  Interestingly enough, while the main narration of the film is in German, there are personal interviews in, say, Italian, which go undubbed or without subtitles.  Still, worth the look.  OVERALL FILM QUALITY QUITE GOOD, BUT VARIES DEPENDING ON SOURCE MATERIAL;

FILM # 3:  THE WINTER WAR ON THE EASTERN FRONT - Though a portion of the film has nothing to do with the subject matter, it does serve as an introduction to other films about the winter campaign on the Russian Front.  OVERALL, QUITE GOOD QUALITY, BUT VARABLE DUE TO USE OF DIFFERENT SOURCES

DVD-R IS IN GERMAN WITH NO SUBTITLES.

137 minutes long.

FILM QUALITY:  Variable, depending on the source of the films being shown; but mostly good to very good.
